1 day old breastfeeding advice needed!

this my second baby - how quickly we forget.

just came out of hospital. should i feed dd2 colustrum when she demands or should i go a certain time between offering/insisting. so far she's only fed properly a few times. other times i offer she's not too hot about sucking. i have very leaky colustrum so she licks and gets drips but isn't very sucky. but i know she can do it as she has done it 3/4 times in last 24 hours. one handed typiung !

I went with demand feeding to start with from what I remember?! seems a long time ago now, but I'll be needing a refresher soon too!!

I'm not an expert but I just kept feeding ds on the basis that the more of it he got the better, that it was all good practice and that it would help establish supply.

I went with demand feeding, too. Even if you intend to introduce a routine later, you'll probably find it's best done on demand in the early days. It'll get your supply going better that way, too.

Try not to go more than 3 hours before offering again. Even a little is valuable to her.

first few days babues can be really sleepy i wouldnt' push it but jsut sleep when they do

Try demand, but my mw told me they shouldn't go more than 5 hours (max) without a feed. I'd be inclined to agree with Lizs.

You don't have to offer per se, but if you give her lots of naked skin to skin, that will encourage her to bf. The more proper sucking she does, the sooner your milk will come in.

CONGRATULATIONS
On demand!Im sure dd2 will let u know if she is hungry!!I remember when my ds was about 2 days old he slept for 7 hours. He had been feeding ALOT so midwife told me to wake him but he was not at all interested, when he woke by himself he had a lovely big feed!My ds used to fiddle about, licking etc when he was using me for comfort.Have u tried feeding in the bath?I enjoyed that cos we were both relaxed and lots of skin to skin!

congrats On demand without a doubt. Personally if bubba slept for 6 or seven hours I might gently offer a boob whilst still asleep if I was feeling paranoid but I do think that at so very young they do need lots of sleep and will let you know when they are hungry. Go for on demand and enjoy

Good luck with bubba no2! I'd say, at the colostrum stage just go with demand feeding. Your "proper" milk will come in just the same on day 2/3. It's even more important to demand feed then. I wouldn't worry too much, I'm sure she's getting some of it.

When your milk is in, don't forget to let her empty each breast before you offer the second, if she's still hungry. Do you remember the foremilk/hindmilk concept from last time?

I think my milk is already coming in! I've tried expressing some off before offering dd2 the breast as I think I was maybe too engorged for her. I'm not painfully engorged (oh joy - that's soon to come!) but I had a flooding milk supply last time so I expect it's going to be too much for her little mouth for awhile.

She fed Okish around 5 and then had a great feed at 8 so we seem to be getting there. I have problems feeding from the right side, like last time. Should I just feed from the left and express from the right for awhile until we get more confident?

I'd try feeding from both sides. If a bit engorged, hand express a bit off, then try different positions (rugby ball on less-favoured side, maybe?). Sounds like you're both getting there though - brilliant!

Awww - Aloha - don't say such lovely things to a hormonal woman.

You're right though - demand is a horrid way of describing your baby's requset to be fed.

I did. Although I guess the sweep is a form of induction too. 12 hours after the sweep I had dd2. Still, at least I got to do the first parts of labouring at home and I wouldn't have had that chance if I'd been properly induced.
