Hi,

My baby drank her bottle of milk and was then projectile sick. She wasn't happy for the few seconds after and needed to catch her breath but after that was ok. Think it upset me more! Anyway, should I give her more milk now as she had thrown the rest up or should I wait? I'm presuming it's a normal baby thing up do rather than she is ill? She has had a funny couple of days could it all be trapped wind?

Thanks

hi there,

Yes it could be trapped wind or reflux or any number of other things, or indeed, just one of those things. Does she do it regularly or is this a one off?

DD used to have really bad trapped wind and if she took more milk without getting a burp up then she would end up vomitting it back up. We always made sure we took a break mid bottle to have a burp.

As for feeding her again, i would offer it to her and see if she wants it. If it was just wind then she is likley still hungry. If she is ill then she probably wont.

BTW, did you notice how what she did vomit up seemed to be much much more than she actually took in. I dont know the physics of it but i swear DD used to bring up twice the volume she consumedHmm

Has it just been the once or is she projectile vomiting after every feed?

If it's frequent she could have pyloric stenosis. This is where the exit from the stomach is too narrow and the milk can't get down so comes back up in a projectile manner. It classically presents in babies aged 4-8 weeks. If she keeps doing it you need to get to the doctor

Does she have a cough or a cold or any other symptoms? Is her breathing OK?

My HV pointed out that it might look like alot of puke, but that is because it will be mixed with digestive juices! Nice.
