flicked through this today at the baby group we attend. It was Shock Shock Shock about feeding older babies. I didn't read it, only flicked, because I was appalled! Do you know it? Have you read it? Am I being stupid/, missing something?

the front cover says "how to bring breastfeeding to a gentle end" that doesn't sound pro breast feeding to me!

peppapighastakenovermylife · 08/11/2010 21:59

I'm confused? It's a book about weaning? Nothing to do with being pro BF or not but choosing to stop? Picture on front depicts an older child. Am confused as to your point?

theidsalright · 08/11/2010 22:01

well, I am thinking about thinking about it when DS gets to two, so that idea is fine with me, although I of course would prefer DS to self wean (as long as he does it around then Smile. It was the content that bothered me.

I am now confused though as it appears to be LLL (who are soooo pro BF) so someone who has it/has read it please come and tell me why i am wrong!

What is in it that you objected to?

MoonUnitAlpha · 08/11/2010 22:04

The first comment on Amazon says it's more encouraging you to continue breastfeeding than telling you how to wean, and the foreword is by Sears - isn't he the attachment parenting bloke?

MoonUnitAlpha · 08/11/2010 22:05

Choosing to wean a child rather than letting them self wean doesn't make you anti-breastfeeding, surely.

MrsBuble · 08/11/2010 22:05

Whats wrong with weaning? I'd rather not be breastfeeding my child through the school gates at lunch...

tiktok · 08/11/2010 22:05

The authors are well-known and highly thought of - it sounds like a good book to me.

thisisyesterday · 08/11/2010 22:05

what is it you didn't like?

fluffles · 08/11/2010 22:06

'a gentle end' sounds like encouraging self-weaning to me...

StealthPoHoHoHo · 08/11/2010 22:06

What did it say about feeding older babies?

StealthPoHoHoHo · 08/11/2010 22:07

only 2 reviews but tey aren't good ones!

theidsalright · 08/11/2010 22:09

yes, it's all very confusing. Dr Sears is usually fantastic. Maybe my flick through didn't do it justice.

I shall stop being cryptic-the bits I was Shock about were allusions to older babies finding feeding sexually arousing and how mothers would need to manage this etc etc. The tone was not the usual that I am familiar with re:nursing "manners". I found this strange and IMO, in keeping with a more hostile approach to extended BF mothers. Perhaps I am being very Catholic about it.

I have found another LLL book called "how weaning happens" that I might order instead.

Sounds odd!

thisisyesterday · 08/11/2010 22:22

you can read a little of it here

thisisyesterday · 08/11/2010 22:29

ok well some pages were missing.... but i didn't find anything particularly shocking in there!

it's more general info about weaning and breastfeeding rahter than tips on how to wean... but apart from that nothing
