how long does it take formilk to dry up?

my ds 2 had all his teeth out yesterday, (BF at night blamed for rotting teeth!)
His mouth is double the size and black and blue, and obviously unable to feed.
last night I had to pump one breast as it was so painful and got anout 2 and half oz and hardly any from the other, they are both quite lumpy and painful today.
does this mean that my milk is drying up?
It's not a bad thing if it is just wondering if it's ok to be this painful?
and how long will it last?

sorry for ignorance, but what will happen between now and when his new teeth come in?

Do you want to stop bf or continue? Sounds like he is in too much pain to feed. What is he eating?

Your milk shouldn't dry out that quickly, I'm sure even if your only express a few feeds a day you keep milk production up and will continue to produce enough milk for a few feeds a day.

apparently his gums will harden and it shouldn't hinder eating
he still has 4 teeth to come through at the back which they will assess.

but been made to feel guilty, but his teeth came through with no enamel on, but they won'y accept this, i even have pictures!

I don't mind the bf, it's a source of comefort for ds (he's had a rough life so far) s I'm all for making him feel safe, but then if the breast milk is harming his teeth, I don't want to go through this again!

It's so difficult isn't it :( FWIW there is a lot of evidence that there's no harm to teeth by BM

Can you contact the dentist/hospital today for advice as it sounds like he may have an infection. Yuour poor Ds. How old is he?

I assume DS 2 means he's two? So, breastfeeding was long-established?

I weaned at 15/16 months (can't remember) and I weaned slowly so there was no discomfort involved. And at 23 months, I can still squeeze out milk if I'm curious enough to do so. if you were feeding regularly it'll be different, but also, women have different pain experiences. Even when mine was a newborn, I didn't experience pain to the point of taking painkillers, but i gather that was quite common.

So the answer is: you can reestablish feeding if you want to, quite easily, assuming I'm right about the age. But if you're in pain, take a painkiller. And, your poor son!

yes ds is 2 and we are quite established, sorry for late reply, had to go to out of hours dentist, he now has an infection in his gums.

I am a wimp, but hate taking tablets so I 'll just keep expressing when it gets to much.
I've just given him a cup with my milk in, and he was a bit perplexed bless, think he knew the taste but was confused as to why it was in a cup. lol x
I think we are getting there has just had a small 'sandwich' (bread and butter) and kept that down will carry on with the pain killers and hopefully back to normal soon.

Oh goodness, poor little thing. I dont have any advice I'm sorry, but really hope he feels better soon.

Hmm, I would be surprised if it was because of breastfeeding. My dd was bf much longer also lot during night, still have all her teeth. also, look at nature, foals will easily still suckle for several years if given the chance, we had a pony who let them suckle for two to three years!, no problems with teeth. So try not to feel guilty, I think that your explanation that they came through without enamel or damaged makes much more sense. Big question 1: is the same going to happen with his adult teeth and is there anything you can do about it, i.e. does he need extra calcium or something else? Try to find a friendly and experienced paediatric dentis and more urgently question 2: is this going to affect his speech and early school years and what can be done about it? I don't have answers I think you need to find a friendly expert, I would not know whom but maybe somebody else knows a good paediatric dentist who helps rather than judges?

I agree with dikk that you should find someone else, mainly to discuss how his teeth might come as adult teeth. (oh just read the rest of her post and realised she said the same)

Your supply should be fine, but watch out for blocked ducts and mastitis. Lots of tlc to those boobs (and DS of course)

the dentist said that it shouldn't affect his speach, eating or jaw growth.
but time will tell.
It shouldn't affect his adult teeth either, as this was from placental insufficiantcy (sp) (it eventually gave up and starved him of oxygen, but thats another story!)

He still has about 4 teeth to come through, which they have predicted to be in the next 6 months, will have to take him back when they do for inspection.
Hope we don't have to do all this again

The dentist who did the op was a paed dentist spacialist, and said that BM contains twice as much sugar as cows milk, and therefore more likely to rot 'vunerable' eeth which I think his are.
In hindsight it may have been better to mix breast with bottle and eventually just bottle, but I was advised that due to his hypoxia at birth BM would be better t help his gut heal, and by 10 weeks he would not take a bottle. think I'm just being made a scape goat!
sorry this has turned into a teeth thread rather than a boobie thread.
They are both ok now, will express the surplus t keep them comefortable until ds is ready for them again.
