How do you know if there is a tongue tie? And what problems does it cause?

DS has a kind of heart shaped tongue. I've asked the hv several times and she said he just has a short tongue. He's 7 months btw.

Anyone know the issue with a tongue tie? Does it interfere with them talking?

Anyone know what I should do now?

My ds had a heart shaped tongue too - although the tongue tie didn't effect his feeding, the doctor we saw recommended we have it snipped when he was a newborn as it can cause speech problems later. I believe it can stop them moving food round their mouths effectively sometimes too.

However, my DP had a slight tongue tie as a baby too, but as he got older his tongue grew and it hasn't caused him any problems (although he can't stick his tongue out very far).

It can cause speech problems, it may not at all. The younger it is done the simpler it is and the quicker it heals.

One friend had her son done around 6 months because he kept pushing the spoon out of his mouth when trying to eat off a spoon. My dd only had partial TT but was snipped at a few weeks old due to bf problems.

In his tongue is heart shaped it's definately TT.

My 4yo is waiting to have a tongue tie op (he had his snipped as a tiny baby but they didn't do it properly, apparently).

His speech is unaffected but he is a terrible eater (turns out he finds it uncomfortable to eat many foods) and he dribbles a lot because he can't swallow saliva properly. Now waiting to have the op under GA.

Thanks all. He bf ok, and feeds fine, maybe a bit dribbly I guess. He is trying to talk already and makes quite a few sounds (bigger brothers and sisters to copy).

I will see the doctor I think as I want it sorted as early as pos.

Thanks again all
