This reminds me of being asked by well meaning relative 'he's feeding a lot (at 4 weeks old), are you sure you've got enough milk? what's wrong with him then?' ... grrr

Initially my DD fed 4 hourly but for 2 hours at a time. After about day 10 she started to feed all the time...looking back, she was probably feeding hourly during the day and 3-4 houly during the night. From about 8 weeks my DD has fed every 2-2.5hours during the day. At night she can sleep for up to 10 hours without feeding.

always, constantly, 24x7..., there is no routine with newborns, who ever came up with that nonsense never had one..

KittyFoyle · 20/10/2010 00:19

Never. For the first 4 months getting her to feed at all was a nightmare. No latch on bottle or breast and just poured milk down her throat in the end. She never wanted more than an ounce if that. Now aged 6 she is skinny but loves everything from brussel sprouts to snails.

Agreed it's a 24 hr feedathon!

Do/did you ever wake a baby for feed in the night or do you ollow the never wake a sleeping baby

Obviously in special care cases they may be woken but in regards to .. they feed on demand during the day or every hour or so but at night they just prefer to sleep more?

i once heard an interview between a midwife and a nigerian lady a day after birth.

midwife: so how often has your baby fed?

lady: 3 times

midwife: (agahst) only 3 times!!!

lady: yes. all the morning, all the afternoon and all the night.

I have never needed to wake DS to ffed him, he seemed to only feed rather than sleep in the in the early weeks, and always lets me know when he is hungry. Although I have heard some have to wake babies to feed, where the baby sleeps all the time (I wasnn't tht lucky!).

I guess it's down to the individual and judge it at the time. It is normal for them to feed pretty constantly at first.

Sorry for type errors, feeding DS!

MoonUnitAlpha · 21/10/2010 16:24

As I said before, as ds was jaundiced I had to wake him every 2 hours at first as he wouldn't wake himself. Once he regained his birthweight I left him to wake himself at night, but I also made sure he didn't sleep longer than 3 hours in the day.

About every three hours, day and night, for at least the first six months. Never had cluster feeding though, and he only took about 10 minutes to feed each time.
