How long should a 7 week old feed for?

My DD is 7 weeks old and while I know that a feed shouldn't be timed, I'm a bit concerned that over the past week her time at the breast has diminished so that a feed is now less than 10 minutes before she loses interest and pulls away fussing. Is 10 minutes a normal length of time to feed? Seems so short to me. At her last weigh in about 10 days ago she was progressing well but the shortening in feeds has happened since. How long do your LOs feed for? She feeds every 2 hours ish

Thanks x

Sounds fine if she is gaining

Some babies are very efficient feeders

The frequency sounds good

Assume she has wet and dirty nappies and is alert and happy in her awake time?

My dd was pretty quick at feeding

Yes plenty of wet nappies and about 2 soiled nappies most days. There have been a few green poos which I know can mean too much foremilk but I really don't know how I can get her to feed longer? Could she really be so efficient at just 7 weeks? Overly anxious first timer here...but at least she smiles lots!

Don't get too hung up on fore milk and hind milk

great link here

Green poo can be a sign of an issue or not - my DD always had green poo but was fine

It goes without saying that if you are concerned speak to your HV or one of the breastfeeding helplines

Good luck with your LO

My 7wk old does exactly the same! I was stressing about it but she seems content, wet Nappies etc so am sure she is getting enough.

Have a chat with your hv or a bf counsellor (I'm lucky enough to have the most fab bf clinic nearby who put my mind at rest).

And well done for bf for 7 wks!

Hope this helps x

My ds2 feeds for between 10-20mins and always has, and mostly every 3 hours. DS1 was a nightmare, feeding for upto an hour at a time and I think that ds2 is just better at it and as you said more efficient. He was 9lb 2 at birth and is upto 11lb 9 at 4 weeks old and as you say plenty of wet nappies. If she is content between feeds and has plenty of nappies then I'm sure you'll find she has put on weight next time she is weighed!

They do get faster with time. DS used to feed for 40 mins each side, now it's 10 mins.

It can vary from feed to feed and from day to day, though.
