C section and BF - pre op panic !

DS1 was delivered by emcs after a long 'pre labour' and faliure to progress. I BF'd him and all was well.

DS2 is due to be delivered by elcs a week today. I'm suddenly in a panic that my milk may not come in or not quickly enough if I haven't laboured first.

Not sure what to expect. Help

I've had an ELCS, and fed the result for over 2 years. It was fine - milk came in buckets by day 3/4 (a day earlier than it did with my VBAC!) and since you've already fed after a section you know all about the rest. :)

t'will be fine, don't worry. my milk came in as normal after an elcs too. still feeding 7 months later.

ShowOfBloodyStumps · 11/10/2010 09:20

Your milk will come in. And you will have colostrum to sustain your ds until then.

You can put his straight to the breast, have immediate skin to skin and keep him in bed with you in hospital with unfettered access to the breast. Because it's an elcs you can think about these things well in advance. All of this will help your milk to come in as quickly as possible.

I was told it is the placenta being removed that triggers milk production so you should be fine.

And what showofcloodystumps says about colostrum has got to be right. Babies are clearly able to survive on just colostrum otherwise none of us would be here.

It will, fear not. It's the removal of the placenta and subsequent fall of hormones that triggers the milk production. No difference imo between my 3 natural births and the crash section in terms of milk. What might be harder is finding a comfortable position to feed in. Can you feed lying down?

x posts. What they said.

Thanks all. I actually meant colostrum but my brain is frazzled. I never knew that about the plancenta, makes sense though.
Feel much better now X

I had no probs after my CS - in fact, bf was a lot easier than after my first VB when I couldn't sit down [ouch emoticon].

Milk came in on 3rd day in vast quantities.

(Now giggling stupidly at " vast quan titties ")

I'm sure you will be fine, good luck.

Mine came in on day 3 after my ECS. Still BFing 16 months on.
