Five minute feeds

I've decided to give up trying to get DS to d a longer feed and am just letting him feed for as long as he wants.

I know I've got a pretty fast let down and when I express it only take me ten minutes to empty my breast.

DS wont latch on for longer than five minutes for a feed now but does seem to be emptying my breast. He's feeding every 2-3 hours.

I'm just concerned that maybe he's not getting enough milk, but I'm trying to go on the principle that if he wants it he'll have it.

We tried to give him a couple of bottles yesterday but he'd only have an ounce or so. I've tried offering the breast more often but he just feeds for an even shorte period of time.

He's always been a big baby, sitting on the 75th centile...I wondering if maybe we've gone through his growth spurt and now I'm expecting him to feed more or longer than he needs to?

If he's gaining weight, producing wet/dirty nappies and seems happy and alert then he's probably just an efficient feeder.

Yep, mine rarely feeds for more than 10 minutes at a time. she is 13 weeks. Her nappies are all fine, making lot of wee and not too green. when she was younger we had a few greenish ones, indicating not enough hind milk - it was when my supply was steadying. I just expressed off the first ounce of very watery foremilk and then latched her on, to make sure she got the fattier stuff.

she is putting on weight - think she is just a super sucker!

Had another couple of five minute feeds this afternoon and got to the point of worrying he wasn't getting enough so offered hm a bottle of formula instead which he turned down...

I guess he's just really good at feeding...He's got plenty of wet nappies and poops about two or three times a day.

We weighed him earlier as well and his weight has gone up since last month and he's still following the 75th centile so I'll just stop worrying...

Helen - My DD1 never fed more than 5 minutes at a time from the day my milk came in - I worried initially and then met a fab HV who basically told me not to worry if she wanted more she would ask. I fed her until she was 18months and right to the last feed it was only 5 mins.
