weight gain again

to start on a positive note, bf is still going great at 16 weeks
probably shouldn't have done this, but we got into the habit of weighing ds every fri on a baby scales borrowed from the chemist's. It's been good up to now as brilliantly reassuring - he's been gaining 140-200g a week (about 5-7 oz). Today we went to the doc's for check-up and 1st lot of jabs ( - but he was great - only cried for a couple of secs ). Anyway, according to the doc's scales ds only gained 80g (2 1/2 oz-ish?) in the past week. Is it OK to have a one-off slow week/period of time? He's on the light side (just under 5.5kg), but started off light, is alert, smiley and happy, peeing and pooing, and the doc didn't seem concerned about his weight. Am I too in thrall to the dreaded scales?

sounds fine to me - ds is about the same and is 3 weeks older, he had several smaller gaining weeks - am also weighing him myself (at baby massage group). it is so difficult isn't it, have to force myself not to trot down the road to see the dreaded hv every week, i always hoped they'd say oh he isdoing so well, but they didn't just said oh give him a bottle

My dd is 5+ months old and a bit of a teeny (9th percentile and not going anywhere!).... she has been gaining on average 3-4oz/week which is gently hopeless, but she is happy, alert, developing, etc. Last week she gained NOTHING (I weigh her at home too, can't stand the baby clinic I'm afraid...), and no matter how I tried to make it look as though she had even an extra ounce on her... well, it just wasn't happening . My dh is worried, but I'm just hoping it's a one off. She started solids this week, and is now eating for BRitain (having shown only the most basic interest in boob/bottle up until now), so hopefully she'll catch up now... is it time for some solids now perhaps Berolina? I wouldn't worry after only 1 off week. Dd is 13lbs 3oz (can't think in kgs...), so crossing my fingers for 13'6" this week at least!

Mine levelled off way before 16 weeks ! His weight gain may well fluctuate or indeed slow down as he gets more mobile so you may want to go to less frequent weigh ins or you'll give yourself a complex. As time goes on week on week changes will beocme less meaningful. One week he may put on more than another due to feeding pattern changes, activity, heat, being a bit off colour etc. Bear in mind that your scales and those at the dr may not exactly match anyway.

it's so easy to get hung up on using the scales. if your baby seems healthy and happy AND the dr seems to be happy with his progress then I'd stop worrying. God, it's so much easier to say that when it's someone else's baby isn't it?!

berolina · 09/09/2005 13:07

According to weight converter he's just over 12lb - birth weight nearly doubled. (Apparently 80g is just under 3oz. And he'd just done a poo )
orangina, I don't really want to start him on solids until 6mo. He's also started going for longer betw feeds so doesn't seem excessively hungry. (Hope that's not actually the problem!) He is getting more mobile Liz, has just started rolling onto his side and onto back from tummy , so maybe he's burning more atm.

Hey Berolina...guess what - it's normal
Babies don't always gain the same amount every week - they aren't machines. You should never compare weights done on different scales either - totally unreliable. They all vary. have confidence - look how far you have come! Glad the jabs went well.

berolina · 09/09/2005 17:01

thanks aloha - re the jabs, he's now developed a fever, so maybe not completely smoothly [sigh emoticon]
