Dumb-assed question about making up bottles.

I feel a bit stupid asking this. I have recently switched to formula feeding. I am following the instructions for making up formula correctly, I think. Boil kettle, wait for water to cool slightly, then measure water into the bottle first, etc.

When I scoop the powder into the bottle, the inside of the scoop immediately gets caked in powder, I think maybe because it becomes damp from the steam coming out of the bottle. I think this must make a big difference to the amount of powder that gets put in the bottle, because the scoop is so covered in sticky powder that it must be now measuring a smaller amount. So I have to wipe it on a paper towel after each scoop.

This seems ridiculous. What am I doing wrong? Should I measure the powder out first into a separate container? Do people use those powder dispenser things? I am using Aptamil by the way.
Thanks

Lol! oh, I shouldn't laugh! But I had this problem too. DC was a couple of few weeks old then, me lacking sleep, recovering from c-section, on antibiotics... feeling sh*te. I'm laughing now because I remember crying when the scoops were caked in powder and I didn't know what to do and my mum told me to stop being so silly.

I'm not sure if this is the best advise as other mums may have better solutions, but I did measure up 6 tommee tippee powder dispensers each night ready for the next day(which I normally had to refill again the next afternoon because DS fed a lot more than 6 times per day). The aptamil scoop stayed nice and dry, and I didn't have to count scoops when baby was screaming wanting a feed.

could you use a bit of kettle water to rinse the spoon and tip it into the bottle?

ReneRusso · 01/10/2010 16:16

but poppydog10, do you mean rinse it once at the end? But surely to measure accurately the amount of powder, wouldn't I would have to have a clean scoop each time? So would have to rinse it and then dry it eg 8 times for a 8oz bottle.

I had this problem when I switched to Tommee Tippee bottles. I just use a little weaning pot thing to measure out powder and then tip it in the bottle. Much easier.

ok, I guess I'll do that. Thanks everyone, glad it's not just me Grin

Oh this used to happen to me! I also worried that I wasnt putting the correct ammount in!
I used one of the little dispensers in the end.
