Adjusting latch when teeth have cut

DS has just cut his second tooth, now has both front on the bottom. The first didn't cause us any trouble, though think that may have been relief that it had finally cut through! This one though... Ouch! My left nipple is fine, but my right is very painful.

Never thought I'd be typing whilst intermittently looking at my nipple, but hey Grin The tubercle directly under and slightly left of my nipple is red and swollen, and the lower half of my nipple and areola is sore.

I know the latch is wrong, and am trying to adjust it, but also aware he will be trying to get used to having these two pointy things in his mouth all of a sudden!

Any advice? Or at least approximations of how long this will last? Am going to smother my nipple in Lansinoh for now,

Hi. That happened to us too. It took a couple of weeks but DS2 adjusted himself. I used a lot of Lansinoh though and if he did try to bite me I removed him fromthe boob immediately, saying no biting quite firmly.

I had a bad latch and lots of air-gulping after the top teeth appeared. Lasted about a week and it sorted itself out.

I get scraping for a few days when a tooth is on its way / shortly after it's arrived, although I can't remember whether I could ever see the effect on my nipple or not.

It usually lasts 2-3 days, although the first teeth may have hurt me for longer.

I used Lansinoh too and it just sorted itself out as DS got used to having more teeth in his mouth.

He's on his eighth now and it seems to have been less of a problem the more teeth he's got.

We had a sore time of it for about 5 days, I just fired up the Lansinoh again to get me through. It sorted itself out with only a little chafing, and plenty of frog-like noises from DS!

DS (17 mo) has just cut his 9-12 teeth and is now cutting his canines, all in the last month or so. It wasn't a problem until the canines all broke though at once a few days ago. Bloomin' heck my poor nipples are shredded!!! Sad Shock

I'm hoping his latch will sort itself out ASAP...(usually has done so in less than a week in the past).

Need to dig out the Lansinoh Grin

You may also find that teething dribble is causing soreness - I end up with at least a week's worth of sensitive nips when a tooth is coming through because of a combination of acidic saliva and dodgy latch.

I really am in agony tonight :(

Have managed to feed him a few times off it because I know I need to, but I am in tears from the pain right now. Its hurting all the time, not just when he's feeding - it feels like the pain of the first weeks. Have coated it in Lansinoh and have a soft breast pad on but even that is hurting.

oh sir boob, i'm afraid i've no advice (ds cut his first last night so have all this to come. Oh joy) but much sympathy. You poor thing. Sad

rubyslippers · 27/09/2010 20:26

Oh dear

DD who is nearly one has just cut her two bottom teeth and i have been very sore, particulalrly on my right side

It is easing after around a week of it ... Have resorted back to lansinoh and also holding her head to try and encourage her positioning

I think it has taken a while for her to adjust as well

A warm facecloth over your boobs can also be soothing

Can you block feed for a while to let the nipple heal? I am guessing your supply wouldn't be too badly affected at this stage

AngelDog · 27/09/2010 20:58

:(

Hope it improves soon.

SirBoobAlot · 27/09/2010 21:33

I tried block feeding, but started to get engorged - he still feeds a lot during the day and at night.

You remember that feeling of dread you have in the day or so after your milk has come in, your boobs are killing you, and the idea of feeding makes you want to curl up and cry? That's how it feels again right now. My whole boob is now killing me. Thought about booking a doctors appointment, but can't see what they would suggest.

Ugh.

A week you say ruby? Shit...

And purely on a pride front, feel like I should bloody well know what to do as am training to be a breastfeeding peer supporter at the moment Grin

Jem thanks for the pointer about the drool!
