Cramps when nursing toddler

My periods returned last month and i imagine I could due again anytime now really (though know they might not be regular yet).

For the last week I have been experiencing really sensitive, sore nipples and cramps/nausea when DD latches on and feeds. It's horrid.

Has anyone else had this? Is it likely to happen every month? I thought we'd got past the biggest challenges but the thought of enduring this for a week every month is filling me with dread.

Any advice or similar experiences?

Could you be pregnant?

greensnail · 26/09/2010 15:38

I was thinking what privetdancer said... but then I thought maybe not

greensnail · 26/09/2010 15:39

sorry, that came out wrong Confused

jemjabella · 26/09/2010 15:52

I had the same feelings when my period returned earlier on in the month. :(

Hulla · 26/09/2010 19:50

Hahaha! Hi snail!

I don't think I'm pregnant. We only started half-heartedly ttc last week so it would be too soon I think.

I suppose I should prepare myself for this happening every month. Oh dear. Do you think it might lessen as I get used to it?

Thanks for the replies Smile

ooh did you? That's exciting, i'll keep everything crossed for you Grin. You never know, we'd only half-heartedly started thinking about trying when DD2 occured.

Very jealous that you only just got your period back btw.

OhNoNotTheHoneyBabies · 27/09/2010 11:32

My periods cam back when DS (now 17 mo) was only 4 mo, so I'm very Envy

I find that him feeding does sometimes make my cramps worse (and they've been pretty horrendous since they came back). I think it's because of the whole hormone thing: feeding makes your womb contract etc.

I find that dosing up on ibuprofen is the best for cramps (better than paracetamol).

Good luck with the TTC!! Grin

Thanks snail & ohnonot..

It's stopped now so I think it must be ovulation rather than my period. I have googled it and it seems it happens post ovulation.

snail did you find nursing during pregnancy painful? Maybe I should reconsider ttc...I could barely handle a week of it without posting a whinge on MN!

I found I got really sore nipples when nursing around ovulation - I started taking a calcium/magnesium supplement and haven't had a problem since!

greensnail · 29/09/2010 13:55

I found it painful during the first few months (although it did coincide with the arrival of top teeth which didn't help). It improved during the 2nd trimester and I can't remember it being a problem particularly after that, although I did occasionally cut short her feeds if it was a bit sore.

It certainly wasn't the worst of my pregnancy niggles, but whinging on MN generally helps most issues!

Hulla · 30/09/2010 15:16

I think I am going to try the supplements - thanks cheesebaby

Oh snail don't remind of any of the pregnancy niggles. I am seeing it through rose tinted glasses at the moment! Smile

I am off to reply to your email now. I know it is very long over due! Blush
