DD had it bad! At 6 weeks, fell off centiles and lost her voice. Took her to A&E because she was wheezing and threw up both boobs in immediate succession.
They weren't that great, told me to top up but DP asked them what the clinical reasoning for this was which shut them up pronto.

It tends to run in families. The valve doesn't form so food free flows back up making them vomit anything from a lot to the whole feed, so then they are hungry again.

Not so bad in bottle fed baby, buy infant gavison over counter which thickens milk but expect constipation with it. We breast fed so hated the stuff. Your GP can prescribe this, but nothing else.

Anyway DD was seen by in hosp that day by Peadatrician who prescribed Domperidon and Ranitadene which worked immediately taking the acid burn away which had made her loose her voice. from then on, a diff baby, no more screaming. She began to gain weight but still threw up some of every feed including solids until the day she got up and walked 13 months.

Its not a problem but needs to be diagonosed by hosp docs so you need a referall from GP.
there are other meds available, I think it depends on the consultant.
Do a search on mumsnet talk for reflux - you will find loads of threads and support groups to learn all about it.
Good luck

Hi
Sorry to hear that.
Take a look at this thread.
It has some great advice Smile.

Ds had terrible reflux, It really sucks.

My only snippets of info are prop up the cot/moses basket on books and never lay the baby flat and get a referal to a pead asap.

Gaviscon made no difference to DS and for a breastfed baby it's a real pain in the arse to administer anyway. If i had another reflus babe I woukdn't even bother with trying gaviscon.

If it's any consolation My DS had reflux so bad it used to cause apnoeas but he had grown out of it and was off all his meds by 6 or 7 months.

Hi, my eldest had reflux. Cot blocks as previously mentioned are a must. I also found keeping her upright for 30 mins after each feed helped.

A friend is going through reflux with her son at the moment. She found gavisgon helped but the biggest change came when she stopped caffine in her diet - much less sick. Worth a try I'd suggest as very easy to do.

Hiya,
We've tried:
Infant Gaviscon (no noticeable difference)
SMA Staydown (awful constipation)
Ranitidine (improvement for a few days but didn't last)
Omeprazole (a nightmare to administer, no noticeable improvement)

and then! We saw a GP whose own child had had reflux, and he prescribed a winning combo of Ranitidine three times a day, and Carobel in the feeds (if your friend is BF you can still use it, I think you give it off a spoon). That's pretty much cracked it.

Our GP prescribed all the above, no need for a Paed referral for us, maybe different GPs have different prescribing power?

Reflux is awful, you see other people with contented snuggly babies and yours can't even be laid flat to cuddle up next to you. Bless them, they're so irritable and uncomfortable all the time.

DD (4m) has awful reflux too.
I think each child reacts differently to various meds. Ranetadine didn't work much on my DD. Omeprazole helped but still not enough. She's now on a combo of Domperidone, Omeprazole and gaviscon. Also she sleeps on an AR wedge.
Check out the reflux help thread and ask your doc for help, and to be refered to a pead if your DC is in obvious pain.
