How much formula should my 5mo DD need?

Hi all, basically as subject says. How much formula should my 5mo be having.

She was EBF for 18 weeks then introduced solids, she's now on 3 meals a day. Last week I stopped feeding except during the night (one feed) and switched to formula.

I really don't think she's now getting enough milk. I checked on the side of the carton and I went with the guide for a 6 mo as she is the correct weight for this stage and because she is weaned and it says she should be on 4 8oz bottles a day. That is (and forgive me if i'm wrong, very tired) 32oz in a day.

Just now I'm lucky if I can get her to take half that.

Today was a good day. This is what she had:

breakfast: pear puree and baby rice 4oz formula
Lunch: 1/2 avocado, 1/2 banana 5oz formula
Dinner: 2 annabel karmel sized cubes of vegetable purees 7oz formula (this is rare)
supper: 4oz formula

So that was 21oz and she'll maybe have a breast feed during the night. But as I say, this was a good day, usually it's 4 4oz bottles!

Any ideas if this is ok or will she take more eventually as obviously her stomach should adjust to new diet.

Oh I should say, I am offering her bottle and intervals between meals but she really isn't fussed or will take 1oz at most. She doesn't seem hungry and is quite happy and content.

I don't want to overfeed her but at the same time don't want to starve her!

"She doesn't seem hungry and is quite happy and content." says it all really. If she refuses when you offer her a feed then so long as she is maintaining/gaining weight I am sure she will be fine.

Am no expert though so wait for other, more qualified, people to give their advice.

rindercella that was what I thought but just being a bit cautious! She was wighed 2 weeks ago, i'll wait another 2 weeks and see how much she has put on.

She's peeing and pooing quite happily. :)

I was basing it on my DN who is 3 days younger, she's on her 4 8oz (sometimes 5) a day but she was FF from birth so used to it.

This is the bit I hate about stopping breastfeeding. :(

I have only ever b/f so really can't offer any first hand advice on ff, but if it reassures you at all, DD2 (who's 5.5 months) has just started weaning - eating 2 proper meals morning and evening, plus breadsticks/cucumber/yoghurt etc at lunch and has now reduced to 5 breast feeds a day. So her routine is now as follows:

7.30 am wakes up, breast feed

8.30 porridge

10 am breast feed, followed by 2.5 hour sleep (Grin)

1.30 - 2 pm nibbles on breadsticks, etc

2.30pm breast feed, followed by short nap

5pm porridge/other solid food

7pm breast feed, bed

2.30 am quick breast feed

I say routine, but it's pretty flexible really. The above is what's happened the last couple of days, but if she's hungry, I'll give her a feed. She's podgy, cuddly and happy so I guess the feeding thing is working. Yours sounds the same, so by my reckoning you're getting it right Smile

Jealous about the 2.5 hours sleep and 7pm bed!!! And the 7am wake up!

Thats a whole other thread though I suppose! :)
