Do FF babies cluster feed?

Hi there, quick question - DS had an odd night last night. Guzzled about 10oz over 3 hours (he's only 5 weeks old!) was fairly cross the whole time and only the bottle would pacify him (we did try everything else!), he spectacularly vomited once or twice, then we tried to put him down to sleep. He went off after a lot of fussing, chatted and half cried in his sleep all night. Every time he woke up and cried I offered his usual night feed (four times, 2.30am, 4am, 5.30am, then 7.30am) and he screamed for a bit, took an oz, puked it all back up and refused more before being settled back to sleep.

Should I not have offered the night bottles, and just tried to settle him back to sleep without? He seems a bit young to sleep all the way through? Was the puking more likely linked to colic/reflux issues? Or was I wrong to give him so much in the evening even though he was clearly demanding it? Very confused (and tired) today.

sorry, can't help, but bump!

I FF mine and yes, there were times when she use to feed every 2-3 hours. I just gave it to her when she wanted it. Have you tried offering water ? If my LO had some colic or was a bit constipated I use to boil some water and put a bit of brown sugar in it which helps.

sucking is comforting to babies. Maybe he just needs to suck

hey again nina! maybe he had a bit of a funny tummy and if he vomited a few times he would then be hungry again sooner than any "normal" feeding pattern.

although dd is nearly 6 months she cluster feeds in the evening, sometimes 2 210ml bottles only an hour and a half apart.. if you think your baby is hungry you should feed him, rather than being a slave to what the packet says!

also maybe he's having a growth spurt, and I would agree he probably does still need a feed through the night - as his tummy probably isn't big enough to take in enough to get him through the night. hope this helps and tonight is better. if he hasn't been himself in the day maybe he's got a bit of a tummy upset. Cooled boiled water may help if you think this is the case. good luck!

Mine (when healthy) cluster/ double feeds before bedtime.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 27/08/2010 22:22

Yes.

Lovethesea · 27/08/2010 22:27

Yes. DD didn't, but DS feeds every 3 hours except in the evenings when he feeds 4pm, 6pm, 8pm say.

He also takes more than the guide on the box and is never sick ... a complete pudding of a boy at present but a healthy pudding!

thanks for all the replies! Sorry for not responding sooner. Had a few awful nights and his feeding has been all over the place but he's been diagnosed with probable Rubella so that explains it really. The crazy feeding/mad vomiting, then being off food totally, coincides with when it probably kicked in. He's fine now apart from a rash and being clingy. Hope you've all had more relaxing bank holidays! :)
