Citalopram and bf

Hello ladies,

I am 28 weeks pg with my second and am on 10 mg AD Citalopram. I bf my first for 10 months, wanted to go longer (couldn't be arsed sterilising!) but baby weaned himself off and after a long time trying to get him interested again, we moved to ff.

Anyway, after a bout of PND the doc put me on a low dose of Citalopram which I have really benefitted from.

However, I have learned that it's "not the safest" AD to take when BF.

Is there anyone out there with any advice?

Should I start halving my dose now in preparation for when the new small comes? Scary, as I feel I will need it more when s/he is here!!

Any advice appreciated.

Cfc.

I don't think you should alter your dose without chatting about it with your doctor first, and you could ask about the safety of it with BFing at the same time?

You can search for information on it at this link here. There is a specific result that relates to lactation, I read it quickly and it looks like there isn't much to worry about. Where did you learn that it wasn't 'the safest'?

Thanks ladybee, I appreciate your reply.

I did a quick search last night before heading to bed (so not a comprehensive one by any stretch). Might have been drugsafety.com...let's have a look.

I will defo speak with the doc before altering the dose, and will ask about bf too.

Thanks again, will have a proper search today!

OP, this is also worth knowing about as it is UK focussed and therefore useful for informing discussion with doctors about prescription.

Thanks Lizzy, that's useful too. I'll speak to the doc indeed.
