Quick Question Diarrhoea and BF

sobloodystupid · 16/08/2010 11:08

My dd is 8 weeks old and exclusively BF. I have had Diarrhoea for 9 days (!) now but she seems fine. Can I take anything without it affecting her, had a rummage in the medicine cupboard -all I have is "Arret" but have chucked away leaflet ,

Why dont you use Formula temp until you are back to normal?

Ineedsomesleep · 16/08/2010 19:24

I'd give the National Breastfeeding Helpline a call on 0300 100 0212 if I were you.

When I needed to know if I could take a medicine they helped me out straightaway.

Could someone get you a bottle of Kaolin from the Pharmacy?

Are you well otherwise?

You don't need to stop bf, even temporarily because you have diarrhoea.

I had this with DD and, although it was grim, my GP advised as long as I kept my fluids up and could eat something, all would be fine.

There is a view that if you have an upset stomach, your body needs to get rid of what's causing it, so remedies to stop diarrhoea are of limited use.

I agree you need to speak to experts though - try La Leche League, the NBH mentioned above and your local breastfeeding counsellors. And your GP, although they may not be up to date with sensible bf advice. But they might Smile.

You have my sympathy too.

Forgot to mention that LYM says, there is no need to stop bfing. I had it and was advised to drink plenty of water and keep going. You have my sympathy too.

I'd recommend you let it run its course - keep feeding as you'll pass on antibodies to the baby :)

CMOTdibbler · 16/08/2010 20:10

BFN say loperamide is fine to take, which is what Arret is

Morloth · 16/08/2010 20:39

No need to stop feeding and if it is a bug rather than something you have eaten then it is quite important that you keep feeding so baby gets the protection your body is busy making.

I take the view that lastyearsmodel has mentoined, better to get it all out and just keep up fluids, rather than taking something to stop your bowel moving it through.

It is horrible, I hope you are feeling better soon.

Thanks everyone, I struggled off to the pharmacy and got Dioralyte and Imodium, I saw what the BFN said but was too chicken to take Imodium in the end. Dioralyte seemed to do the trick and am back to normal today, thanks so much for your replies, was very Blush to talk to anyone in RL.!
