Galactagogues

I can't believe I've just learned and used that word, it's fab!

DC3 due next week and after 2 disastrous attempts at BF I'm going all out this time.

To help establish my supply (I have had breast surgery) I would like to try a tea or another milk booster.

Any recommendations please?

this is list of galactagogues

tis indeed a great word!

However, be VERY CAREFUL about using herbs etc, while you are pregnant. There are herbs that can be very dangerous to an unborn baby.

You can't boost your supply if the supply hasn't started - i.e. after your milk comes in, a few days after giving birth.

wait til after you've given birth.

I had a breast reduction in 2004 and am currently breastfeeding my 3 week old daughter. I'm taking fenugreek capsules (3 x 2 per day) but have no way of knowing whether these are making any difference, as I started them as soon as we got home from hospital. As far as I know, there's only anecdotal evidence supporting its use, but I'm v. much of the "won't hurt, might help" school of thought so felt it was worth a punt. Only side-effect is a slight maple syrup smell from my skin!

Domperidone, an anti-emetic medication, is a known galactogogue but you have to take it in large quantities and it can have some unpleasant side-effects. Most GPs won't prescribe it off-licence but you can buy it over the counter.

Good luck with everything! I didn't think I'd even get to this stage without supplementing so anything is possible.

I'm taking fenegreek tablets and also have a Syncotocin spray (prescription).

My ds was very prem and I struggled with expressing for so long. I took domperidone to increase supply. My GP hadn't heard of it being used like this but was happy to prescribe it, and I took normal quantities (3 tabs a day) for several months. It really made a difference and I didn't have any side effects. But I guess they would only recommend it if you're already struggling with supply so hopefully you won't need it! Good luck.

I took some fenugreek last week as trying to get supply up to start developing an expressed store for my return to work. Dd2 is now 11 weeks and bf well established. OMG. Incredible response. Have stopped it as couldn't cope with the supply as we've now gone on holiday and I'm away from the pump although dd2 did a sterling job draining the excess! Can anyone tell me if the extra milk is normal consistency or if there's just an excess of fore milk?
