I'm due to have my 3rd DC in december and want to try breastfeeding again. It didn't seem to work with first two DC's, DC1 wasn't interested, DC2 would feed (I think) for an hour and 10 minutes later scream for more. I ended up trying fourmula after two days and he went a couple of hours between feeds.

What is normal when they are first born? I'd really like to BF but don't want to starve DC3.

I don't think there is a "normal" because all babies are so different.

It took three days for my milk to come in, so DS lost a bit of weight, but he certainly didn't starve! He used to feed every couple of hours round the clock after the first week or so, then gradually slowed down to every 3 hours.

I think it's great that you want to try BF again even though you had a bad experience before, and you should definitely mention this and your concerns to your MW/HV.

Normal in the first few days is anything from 4 hourly to constant. Once your milk comes in on day 3-5 the baby should be able to go a bit longer between feeds, by 2 weeks old should manage 2.5-3 hours.

Hang around on this board for a bit and by December you'll be an expert! Wink
