I am bf my ds who is now 9 weeks. Whilst he seems to pee for England and produces endless wet nappies he rarely poos - maybe once every 3 days.

Is this normal?Confused

He seems to be gaining weight steadily.

After about 6 weeks many bf babies slow down on the poos, so as long as he's having wet nappies I wouldn't worry too much.

in bf babies everything from a few times a day to about once a week is normal. so your ds is just doing great!

Thanks Rhinestone and Mousy - that's good to know as it seemed a bit slow to me. He used to poo a lot more. Now he's just v windy.

DS went 24 days without a poo, until last Monday and we haven't seen any since then as well. Is quite nice actually.

He is bright and happy and gaining weight, the farts are pretty bad though. Grin

my dd was the same- once a week. Now she is on solids- every morning she goes red in the face and starts grunting- its very funny!

Enjoy the lack of really gross nappies!

Anything up to two weeks between poos is normal, as long as the poos are soft. Breastmilk doesn't have a lot of waste material in it, so there's very little to poo out.

(This is not true for babies under 4-6 weeks.)

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 09/08/2010 13:08

Yep, normal. The first few weeks they poo constantly, and you think how can they possibly be getting anything out of the food? Then they slow right down, because breastmilk is such an efficient food that very little goes to waste. They speed up again when you introduce solids, if not a bit before.

24 days is quite a long time, though! I think my daughter's record was a week.

Oh I was freaking, but he seemed so well with it (soft tummy etc) that I just couldn't bring myself to mess with his innards just to get him to poo.

When it did come I couldn't figure out how he had managed to "hide" such volume in such a small body.

There was a LOT.

Thank goodness for MN.

Went to the baby clinic today and mentioned the sudden slow down in pooing to the Health Visitor who, instead of telling me it was perfectly normal, suggested i give DS prune juice. Needless to say i ignored her advice.

Just as well because after a barren 5 days it all came out this afternoon and was nothing if not plentiful! Grin

Our DD has a poonami every week or so, completely normal - and a a bit of a bonus of breastfeeding I think! Although I am pleased to hear that others suffer with the 'man farts' she produces - DD's scare away sweet old ladies who lean in her pram to coo at her - they are rank!
