Poor DD is celebrating 6m by having constipation

DD had blood in two nappies today and I consequently went to the GP. She has a tiny little tear on her anus He seemed nonplussed when I said all she ate was breastmilk with some tiny tastes of finger food (we are mixing BLW with rough purees and baby rice for breakfast but she only takes a minute amount). I have given her water on a couple of occassions but don't see the point as she has so much BM.

GP has told me to give her water to up her fluid but I am very reluctant to do this as I don't want to inhibit her BFing by filling her up with water. Tiktok, if you're around I would value your thoughts

Drop the solids for a few days/weeks? Almost certainly the iron in the baby rice.

Ack, do they put iron in baby rice? Iron causes wicked constipation.

But yy if the constipation has started since you introduced solids, then the solids are the problem.

Baby rice (and banana, and even apple) are constipating so I would stop with that.

Instead go for lots of BFing and something like apricot or plum puree or stewed little chunks.

My DN had constipation before weaning and was advised to have prune juice, but personally for a baby who is having solids I'd try with just the stewed plums and apricots first.

Doc has said to give water because he is forgetting the effective de-constipating effects of breastmilk - you would give water to a non-breastfed, rather older baby, probably, to ensure lack of fluid intake (common in weanlings) was not making her constipated. Perhaps your HV might have a better understanding?

A 6 mth old only taking tiny amounts of solids should not be having water - her calorie intake could drop alarmingly.

Yes, I'd agree that solids could be the root cause of the problem - you could drop them for a few days until she gets back to normal.

Anyway, you could check it all out with the HV.

Thanks ladies, there's an HV drop in session on Monday so I will take her there

MumNWLondon, that's pretty much what her fod consists of - the organix banana porridge, stewed apple and some broccoli and green or runner beans.

Will drop the solids over the weekend
