Mastitis - when to see GP?

Yest. evening I had a very hard sore breast, fed from it a few times now - full feeds but the red patch has come up and still painful. The other one is the same, but abit milder. How long do I try and feed it out for, and when do I go to GP? Massive chills last night, lost thermometer but I felt like death warmed up. THanks

You must go straight away, and get some antibiotics.

Get in the bath too, massage with soapy water, and really massage the sore bits from the outside in to helo clear the ducts. You can see when the milk starts to slow.

If the red patch doesn't go away with massage and ABs INSIST on a scan as you don't want to have an abscess.

Mastitis is HELL and I felt so ill so I really really pity you but the ABs work QUICKLY, so get yourself down there with an emergency appointment.

If it doesn't get better keep at them till they sort you out.

Argh, went to GP and got ABs (was sweating buckets when I was there and she says DH has to take tomorrow off [skint]) but she forgot to sign the prescription and they are closed now! Have to go back Friday so I guess I'd better ring out of hours for a new prescription....

Oh no! Can you not just scribble on it and fake it? I would! Maybe I have very loose morals.

You need to be looked after glad DH can stay home tomorrow.

Thinking of you.

Haggisfish · 28/07/2010 20:51

definitely fake it! then off to emergency chemist. hope you feel better soon.

Did you get it sorted ? Mastitis is ghastly, isn't it - but the antibiotics do clear it up quickly

I had quite serious mastitis, sweating, shakes, temperature and so on and found the following really useful:

  • combing boobs in bath (soap + wide toothed comb, running it towards nipple) after a hot compress
  • drinking litres and litres of water and orange juice
  • massaging the hot/blocked area
  • feeding continuously from that side and keeping it as "empty" as possible

I had the ABs on hand in case I didn't get better, but really wanted to avoid them, as DS was still so tiny (2 weeks).

If you can't get ABs before tomorrow, might be worth giving the above a go. Hope you feel better soon

I got te ABs but it started to clear with feeding and massage, but am taking them as its still a little warm and sore that side. Dh was going to scribble on it but I thought we had better not incase they are checked
