If you had thrush with DC1 did you get it again with DC2?

I had an awful time with thrush when I had DS1 - I gave up bfing after 10 weeks of absolute agony and was devastated about it. DC2 is due in Dec and I'm trying to prepare myself as best I can so that I have a better experience 2nd time round.

I was just wondering if any of you had thrush first time, did you get it again with number 2 and if not did you do anything differently? I'd appreciate any info/experiences! Thanks

hi phoebe, I also had horrible thrush with dd1 and had to give up bf just before 3 months, but with ds2 I didn't have it, and could establish bf without any problems

One thing that was different between the 2 pregancies is that in the second I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and was put in a diet of low-carb and no sugar for the last 6 weeks before birth. It was tough, but apart from controlling my weight-gain (I actually lost weight), i believe this diet contributed to control thrush levels (since thrush feeds from sugar, I basically starved it!).

I hope second time round is better for you too... OMG I remember the pain in my nipples caused by the thrush as one of the 2 worst things I have ever had in terms of pain (the other is piles!).

Yes but when I had it with dc2 I knew what it was an rang the gp and then got treating it straight away. it wasn't the agonising mystery of the first time i had it.

Thanks - I'm trying to cut down sugar but am currently scoffing a biscuit so I could definitely try harder!

It's good to know you managed to deal with it LooLOO - It took me so long to work out what it was and then convince the dr's (who were useless), I guess I'll be able to catch it quicker this time...

It's hard to forgo buiscuits during pregnancy. Don't be too drastic!
I'd say you are right - you'll be more prepared this time round because you know what thrush feels like and can recognise the symptoms, and if it does happen again you will be able to get treatment much quicker, so don't worry too much. I hope everything goes well, good luck!
