thrush - not sure how to continue

DS - 2weeks old - has oral thrush. Consequently I have it in my nipples. We started on the creams today but my nipple pain is awful. I'm in tears through every feed and even expressing is killing me. I really want to keep breastfeeding him but I'm not sure how long I can cope like this. He's feeding badly and is crying a lot too - presumably because his mouth is sore.

Anyone know when the treatment will kick in? Any tips to get through this? If I didn't feed/express for a day or twoand gave formula would my milk dry up? Or would I get mastitis?

I really don't know what to do.

suzi, i had it too at a later stage, have u a LaLEche League number handy they have good advice re feeding with thrush, i got antibiotics but my baby was older.
leave the expressing for awhile
and talk to your hv/ doc again, someone else with better info might come along

i am just getting over breast thrush, i have tried creams etc but in the end the only thing that worked was fluconazole on prescription, have a look at my thrush thread theres advice from different mnetters on there

i would go the fluconazole route too. i had thrush when ds was newborn & it was absolute agony, i used to cry too. you need to make sure the gp gives you a big enough initial dose (150mg), then 50g twice a day for a week. the baby can be treated with nystatin drops too.

i know it's hard, but i would try & continue feeding if you can. stopping for a couple of days at this stage will do really bad things to your milk supply.

lots of luck, i know how horrid it is.
