Formula brands

Currently using Aptimil ready mixed cartons and expressing enough for one or two feeds a day.

Baby farts loads!
Sometimes she pulls her legs and seems uncomfortable which I think could be wind.

Could this be the formula?

I fed SMA one day that I ran out of Aptimil and it seemed to make her poo very runny.

What are your experiences of different brands?

Yes it could be the formula.

I'm sorry but I can't give any advice on different brands, I've only ever used my own, but I do know lots of people whose dc had similar probs on cows milk formulas.

I used SMA with ds1 and he had bad wind, funny colour and consistancy poo and seemed to have stomach cramps.
My hv told me it was best not to keep switching the brands as it would upset him further but wish I hadn't listened.
I used cow and gate with ds2 and although he didn't become constipted like ds1, he still displyed all other symptoms.
This time I was told it is because the human stomach isn't made to take milk from other animals or something but I think this was just the hv having a dig about me not bf.
A pharmasist told me it is best to avoid soya based formulas for boys as it can affect fertility.
I didn't really look into any of these theories much but would recommend some kind of google search

i switched to the aptamil easy digest formula for a while with dd.
But we also switched to nuk teats at the same time so not too sure which one helped the most with the wind!

Funkycherry have a look at this leaflet for parents or this leaflet for HCPs. They give independent advice about formula.

I have found that HVs (reports from other girls not me as I have always avoided contact with HVs and midwives over and above the necessary) recommend Aptamil. it is seen as being closest to greastmilk.
DD was on Aptamil to start with when I began to move from bf to ff but was windy and not that interested. When I tried Cow and Gate (more to do with Tesco having run out of Aptamil catrons than anything else) she was much happier so have continued on that. Other people have told me SMA leads to constipation.

pommedeterre · 19/07/2010 10:18

breastmilk. Obviously.

tabouleh · 19/07/2010 10:24

that's because Aptamil market very very strongly to HCPs and also they used to use the slogan "closest to breastmilk" - it's been banned now!

OhYesIShipThat · 19/07/2010 10:31

Aptimil has been very well marketed, which is why HVs recommend it - there's nothing special about it to make it any different to other formulas or closer to breastmilk.

There ought to be more information about this out there - proper comparisons of ingredients and so on - to help people choose, but there isn't, so I guess it's trial and error!

Cow and Gate. I found it quite easy to switch on to cows milk at just before 1 as it tastes most like cow's milk. Aptamil has a very distinct taste which I think would make switching to cow's milk more difficult.

I used SMA with DS1 & it did make him constipated at first, and he went through a colicy stage - crying at night for few weeks. I use Aptimal with DS2 who is now 15wks & have found it very good - he has never had colic or any major problems with wind. I think the bottles you use can make a difference too - Avent are supposed to reduce colic {smile]
