Hi all,

Something happened today. Thought feeding was going as normal but then realised my right boob felt engorged, semething I haven't had for ages(have been bf for five months). Anyway tried feeding it to DD and she kept crying so gave her the other side. Then realised a lump occuring near the nipple and a white spot(a blocked duct??)tried expressing it didn't work then read I should try feeding her, did that, although she wasn't happy she eventually got milk out of it. I also tried expressing from it in case that worked but just couldn't. Right now it feels ok but I Still have this white spot yet nothing hurts as yet. Will it just clear up or should I do something?? DD sleeps through so I think I should try to express tonight to avoid a build up of milk or something...but I don't normally.any advice???

When you say a white spot do you mean a white patch of skin or a spot like a white head pimple? Does it hurt?

blackteaplease · 18/07/2010 20:36

It sounds like a bleb, or milk blister, I have had two and they do give engorgement. Have a look at Kellymom for treatment solutions www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/nipplebleb.html

Hopefully that link will work.

Like a white head pimple. Not sure if it is a blocked duct or milk blister. It only hurts before feeding, feeding relieves it although it hurts when she does it. Just noticed that it suddenly started hurting when she fed off that side whereas have never been sore from bf that much(only when I first started bf). Will check kellymom...Should I express tonight even though she doesn't normally feed at night. I kind of feel like she hasn't had good feeds today also but she is still sleeping soundly. Surely she would wake if she was hungry...am a bit worried???

JUst hand expressed(or tested it) milk is still coming out of that breast but loads. This kind of makes me think she hasn't fed enough and there is excess milk or something. She has been screaming today, more than normal and sporadically which me and DP put down to teething as she keeps dribbling and eating her hands. Am worried she hasn't fed enough. I can't help but think she hasn't grown as much this week too. Maybe I am over worrying ???

Should I express tonight.....???Unsure as my breast should be used to not producing milk at night.

How does it feel this morning? If its not better it might be worth giving a bf phone line a ring to talk it through.

I wouldn't worry too much about a few odd weeks where she doesn't grow much. By the time they get to 5 months growth is slowing and can go more in bursts. When they are newborn you can almost notice the difference daily!

I'm not an expert but i would probably put a warm hot water bottle on it and hand express a little if it feels uncomfortable. Just expressing a little bit at times when you dont normally feed shouldn't stimulate your supply too much especially 5 months in.

I found with both mine that they were fussy feeders when their front teeth were coming through. Try putting teething gel on her gums a few minutes before a feed.

Well,

Am making sure she is feeding off that side and it seems fine...yay...still have a white spot????It may be just a milk blister as all is ok now.

So far today she has been fine....sometimes one day can be completely different to the next!!! Well, better go get her some teething gel. Thanks eveyone for advice(sorry, I was having a bit of a worrying waffle last night

Glad you've seen some improvement.

Just wanted to add my experience.

I had this about 3 months ago. I've had mastitis twice in my right breast, and it was in this nipple that I noticed a white spot, at the same time as a lump. I read up on kellymom and did all the things she suggests, including the needle thing which I really don't recommend. Anyway, my white spot/blister came and went, and it hurt when ds fed, and I was all in a dither and about to go to my GP when it just disappeared. I probably had it off and on for 2 months. It hurt, but not too much, and as I didn't get mastitis I just carried on nursing.
