National Breastfeeding Picnics, Monday 19th July

Following on from my plug on the GMTV site I thought there should be a separate thread about the picnics.

These are happening nationally on Monday 19th July, to promote the campaign for legislation to protect breastfeeding mothers and babies/children.

In Scotland there is a Breastfeeding Act, which has made it a criminal offence to stop someone from feeding a hungry child in public. If you are hassled, you can call the police who will come and deal the hassler a hefty fine.
In the rest of the UK, you would have to leave the premises if asked, then find and sue the owner at a later date. This is NOT FAIR [grr]

There is some protection from current and proposed legislation, but this does not go far enough. How many will really go the whole hog and sue? Far easier to get on the phone and call the police, as you could in Scotland, non?

The more the merrier... find your local picnic, come along on Monday, and then speak to your MP / local paper / aunt's cousin's dog etc to spread the word and back the campaign!

oh golden! Such a shame! Is there no way you could get a bus to roundhay...there are lots...au least every ten mins i think? if i hadn't already put the word out i would change it to town...sorry!

GoldenGreen · 16/07/2010 15:04

sadly don't think time will allow but really hope that you get lots of people to Roundhay and that the weather is good!

Trying4Baby1 · 16/07/2010 15:10

Oh, why are there none in Scotland? Even if we do already have the legislation in place I still love the sound of a breastfeeding picnic!

MoonFaceMama · 16/07/2010 15:19

i think turn out might be a bit low! Is rather last minute...any ideas for way's to spread the word gratefully recieved!

MummyWithA1Family · 16/07/2010 22:49

Sorry didn't reply sooner Moonfacemama but I've also got the back problem and have been stuck in bed for a couple of days so unsure if I'm going to get there or not but will def be trying. If Monday doesn't work out any brave bf mummies fancy sitting slap bang in the heart of city centre business district another day? That'll certainly raise awareness and see how many comments we get!!
As I'm not able to bf due to meds, my DS and I could be the bf bodyguards - ready to challenge any gobby/ignorant people who object!! Now who's up for that?

We don't eat our lunch in public toilets so why should our babies have to?

Good luck to everyone taking part.

Hope to see you 1230, Roundhay Park bandstand, Leeds Moonfacemama

MoonFaceMama · 17/07/2010 07:50

no probs mummywitha1family really hope your back gets better, it is a complete pita! Would be up for a boob-in sometime! Maybe goldengreen might be interested too?

TruthSweet · 17/07/2010 08:16

SirBoobalot - Where in Brighton is the picnic going to be held? I'm in Crawley but can travel down with DCs.

SirBoobAlot · 18/07/2010 11:16

Sorry Truth only just seen this! Will be at 2pm in Pavilion Gardens. Would be lovely if you could make it!

TruthSweet · 18/07/2010 12:14

I've booked my train ticket! Where in the gardens is everyone meeting? Near the Cafe? I don't know Brighton very well so please excuse me if I am late or get lost!

SirBoobAlot · 18/07/2010 12:32

Well I have a wine coloured buggy (tis a bit of a tank, you can't miss it!) and I will be taking my multi coloured walking stick. I will be kinda hanging around in the area near the cafe. Do you want my mobile number so you can hold of me if you get lost?

SirBoobAlot · 18/07/2010 13:40

Jelly, there is one in Warrington and in Manchester - is that any good for you?

SirBoobAlot · 18/07/2010 13:40

Sorry, meant Birmingham.

JellyBellies · 18/07/2010 15:09

Think its too far for me SirBoobAlot, thanks though! I don't have a car and that makes it a bit difficult.

SirBoobAlot · 18/07/2010 17:41

Are you able to get the train, Jelly? My family live in Warrington, I know the park, and its about five minutes walk from Warrington Central to where the picnic is happening.
