Expressed breast milk... how much?

Hiya,

DD is 7 weeks old and have just started to try her with a bottle of EBM.

Never managed a bottle with DS as his tongue tie prevented it so its all new to me.

I just expressed 6oz this morning (from one side) and fully expected her to take it all as it took about 10 monites to express and thats roughly how long she'd feed for.

But she only took 2, maybe 2 1/2 oz.

And then sparked out having only just really woken up.

Is it the effort of learning something enw that has made her sleep, or is that a reasonable amount for a feed? It seems quite a small amount somehow.

Can you tell me how much your (how old?) baby takes please?

my 8 week old takes between 1oz and 4oz. He feeds for only 5-10 minutes on the breast.

I express by hand and it takes me about 10 minutes to get 2-3oz. With a pump I can get twice as much in that time, so it's not a great indication of how much your baby will actually need.

I used the Kellymom website which suggested for my LO around 4oz in an expressed bottle from 6weeks onwards. Have a look on there.

When we first offered my DD an expressed bottle at 6 weeks she struggled to take more than 3 oz. I always expressed 4 oz but she wouldnt manage to finish it initially, but gradually took more as the weeks went on. If you are feeding on demand I wouldnt worry too much at the moment so long as she is waking up looking for more food and is producing lots of wet and dirty nappies.

I use the rule of thumb that BF babies typically take about 1oz an hour of EBM and that's regardless of age (once above about 6 weeks)

DS2 is 12 weeks and takes 3-5oz.

She seems to be taking anything between 2-3oz, but its early days - I've only been giving her a bottle for a few days and its stilla bit of a struggle.
I hope she'll get more ued to it...
I'm only giving her one a day - the rest is boob.
