Which formula and settling baby after feed?

I have sadly had to start giving my 3 week old son formula (thrush, mastitis, severe pain, from bf despite loads of counselling).

We are currently half way through (3 days so far) gradually switching from boob to bottle and I have 2 questions. Which is the best formula to give him? We are using Aptamil at the mo, although as a vegan/veggie family I am loathe to do this.

Also, finding it much more difficult to settle him than after breastfeed. Using Infacol and lots of winding, but don't get many burps and he is awake for up to 2 hrs after a feed - I am shattered. Any tips on how to settle? Is it the switch from boob to bottle or is that concidence?? Should I try a different formula?

My first baby, I feel so clueless

MWs told us (antenatal class) that formula in the UK is so regulated that they are all pretty much the same, so just buy the cheapest formula and only experiment if you find that really doesn't suit your child.

Perhaps you could try soya-based formula, though I've heard they aren't ideal nutritionally either.

Apparently Hipp Organic is veggie?

Given that he is now having a bottle, he will be taking in more wind. You could try winding every 2 oz or so. Also, colief can help (it is expensive though).

My DS2 (2 weeks old) is struggling with wind - he currently settles on his tummy (and I have a breathing mat for my peace of mind).

I hope things start to improve.

Hipp organic is not vegan as it has Omega 3 in it, only the milk in the cartons is, Cow and gate is the same it has fish in it too.

My son is on SMA we have not tried aptamil.

Cow and gate is horrible anyway, the Hipp in the ready made cartons is probably the closest to breast milk taste wise so he may be more happy with it.

I know this sounds a bit odd but please give the NCT breastfeeding line a call:

Breastfeeding Line - 0300 330 0771
8am?10pm, seven days a week.

They have lots of info on ff and different types of formula and bottles. They may also be able to give some info on the reaction that your DS seems to be having.

They will also be able to talk to you about the feelings you are experiencing after having to stop bfing.

Sounds like you are a good Mum to me, but perhaps didn't get enough support to help you through.

Rugged my understanding is that you should only use soyabased formula on the advice of a doctor.

we use aptimil. was told by a midwife that to the extent that they can, they recommend Aptimil as the closest to breastmilk.

My DD also suffered from wind. We started giving her chamomile tea in her formula and also switched her bottles from Avent to Tommee Tipee Closer to Nature. Would really recommend the CTN bottles. DD is a pleasure to feed now where as before it could be a struggle.
