OK, I posted on here a couple of days ago but am still in real confusion about my DD who is 5.5months old.

She has been fed with nipple shields since she was 5 days old (would not latch at all when born). This has been really successful, I have had no problems with supply, my LO has gained weight and we are both happy and healthy.

Last week I discovered by accident that she could now latch without the shields and have been trying to do this as often as possible.

In the last 3/4 days, feeding has been a nightmare! My lo will latch on without the shields and either does really rapid feeds (5mins) or just fusses on the breast, I try her then with the shields and she just fusses too. This was happening only during day feeds but today she was really fussy during her first feed too. I try to feed every 3 hours (I was told to do this my my HV when she was first born due to slow weight gain) and she gets a dreamfeed of 180mls at around 11 at night (and then sleeps through). I am now considering switching to formula so that I can at least know she is getting enough milk. We do give 1 ice cube of carrot/pear at 11.30 half way between two feeds but it is not just the feed after this that she is fussy but all day.

She seems happy enough but has never really demanded food (one of the reasons that I feed 3 hourly) so am at a loss.

Any thoughts?

Did the weaning coincide with this fussing at all?

How is she if you just use the shield from the start of the feed?

Also, she may well be teething, which can make them fussy.

If you're worried about her getting enough milk, then feeding more regularly should help.

Yes, when she started to take pear, the fussing really began in earnest.

Might be that. Hopefully someone with a little more knowledge can suggest something.

i would try and work out what is causing it first before changing to formula.

as wasting says it could be the pear. try stopping that for a while (there is still plenty of time to introduce weaning) and see how she gets on. also try starting the feeds with the nipple shields as you were doing to see if it makes a difference.
