If you loved the St Mary’s chronicles/ Time police series, what other books would you suggest?

As per the title. I know there are a few of us on Mumsnet who love these! Not necessarily looking for a series, but love the time travel aspect of these books, so preferably along those lines. I’ve read some of Jodi Taylor’s other books, but not quite as gripping as the SM/ TP ones. Thanks!

I've been recommended The Ministry of Time, a standalone (I think) by Kaliane Bradley, by a friend who shared my love for the chronicles of St Mary's. I've saved it for my holiday in a few weeks, with high hopes.

Similar in terms of an elevated voice, scholarly whimsy, humour and adventure (including time-travel, though that's not the main focus) with a side-heap of romance, there's Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Fairies trilogy.

I quite liked A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness which is romantic fantasy with time travel later in the trilogy, but the prose is less elevated so YMMV.

Before the Coffee gets Cold is a stand alone in translation from the Japanese; magical realism rather than fantasy. I enjoyed the time travel premise at its heart, but as a feminist found it enraging.

There are off the top of my head... will have a look on my kindle for some more.

I love these books too! Have you read The Ballad of Smallhope and Pennyroyal and its sequel? If you’re into audiobooks, I also suggest listening to the St Mary’s books as the narrator really brings them to life and adds layers to the stories.

I second Connie Willis. She wrote a trilogy about the blitz but for more of a daft St Mary’s vibe, maybe start with To Say Nothing of the Dog.

I liked Genevieve Cogman’s Invisible Library series. Not time travel exactly but similar vibes and similar strong main female character.

The Quantum Creators series by Eva St John has a very similar vibe, very enjoyable.

I’ve just finished the ballad of Smallhope. I didn’t expect too much as the characters haven’t really been that rounded in the other 2 series, but I actually really enjoyed it. I’ll look at Connie Willis

As another Jodi Taylor addict, I have her weekly free newsletter and she often posts a book recommendation there. I’ve bought/borrowed a few she’s mentioned.

For time travel, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Jason Ayres Time Bubble series and his “Year in the life of …..” series.

I love these and have struggled to find something as good.

The Rivers of London aren’t bad and the Ministry of Time one I also liked. The Untied Kingdom was good as well. I didn’t like the Time Bubble, that started well but felt very rushed.

I wish Jodi Taylor would write more books with Max in, or Elizabeth Cage-I have not enjoyed the Time Police or the Smallhope ones nearly as much.
