I've been listening to the audiobook (how else could you get through the ironing/housework?😉)
I enjoyed the start/premise but now, at approximately half way through, I'm not particularly engaged. Worth persevering? Does anything else happen except awkward meetings? I presume at some point the protagonist gets found out or unravels but I'm finding it hard to care....

I found it all very "meh". Finished it but I do not understand the fuss about this one.

Thank you @TotallyFloored ~ I'm going to give up on it. There are plenty of other recommendations on here.

I thought it was a good idea that rapidly ran out of steam.

BeMintBee · 30/09/2024 16:57

I felt pretty meh about the last third of the book. It started really strong and then just lost its way

PolaroidPrincess · 04/10/2024 18:41

I listened to it on BBC sounds. It was ok to listen to whilst doing something else like driving but agree that it's not great. I don't understand the hype either.

FknOmniShambles · 04/10/2024 18:44

I loved it to begin with but it definitely ran out of steam. The ending was a bit like a Point Horror-type psycho reveal.
Glad I read it though!

agreed. It started to get a bit "contemplating its own navel". I finished it because it was a Book Group one but really felt it wasn't worth the time investment

Mynameistallullah · 04/10/2024 18:49

I really enjoyed it, but wouldn't say it was life changing or anything. If you don't like it I wouldn't bother with the rest of it.

redtrain123 · 04/10/2024 18:49

I’m in the ‘glad I read it’ camp also, I think it brings up so interesting questions. I read it for bookclub, so maybe talking About it made it more interesting. If nothing else, it was an interesting insight into the publishing world.

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 04/10/2024 18:57

It was very meh to me. I'm glad I only borrowed it from a friend and didn't buy it.

BlondeFool · 04/10/2024 18:58

Hated it. I didn't finish.

Ursulla · 04/10/2024 19:01

It would have made a decent short story. At a push, a novella. But it was way too long for the content. Which is ironic, given that it's mostly about people writing things on twitter.

cansu · 04/10/2024 19:10

I listened to this ages ago on radio 4 I think and loved it. I was pretty surprised as it wasn't something I thought I would like and I had not heard of it at all.

Thewholeplaceglitters · 04/10/2024 19:12

I listened to the radio 4 adaptation. It was interesting enough that I wanted to listen to the end and the premise was an intriguing one but I haven’t felt like I need to read the book.

It sounds like you're at that tricky middle point where things can feel a bit slow. If you're not too invested right now, it might be tough to push through, but sometimes the payoff at the end makes it worth it! If you think the premise has potential, maybe give it a little more time to see if things pick up. But if you’re really struggling to care about the characters, it might be okay to move on to something more engaging. Housework is too dull without something enjoyable in the background!😃

I found it very heavy on the workings of the publishing industry!

I read it and really enjoyed the first 1/3rd, too, then it lost all its energy. I think she could have taken that basic idea and written a much better book.
