Is anyone else gutted by 'My Favourite Mistake'?

Like Anna wouldn't have mentioned the whole Joey thing? Desperate plot much? Sorry Marian, I have loved EVERYTHING you have written until this.

Ah, I’ve been toying with the idea of spending my current audible credit on this as I usually love Marian Keyes. Now think I’ll add my name to the library reserve list instead!

Dustyblue · 03/05/2024 07:24

Not gutted exactly but less than enraptured. Marian writes so well, still makes me laugh occasionally, but I'm about halfway through and getting pretty bored.

I'll finish it, because I still enjoy her prose and turn of phrase. Also I'm 49 so the perimenopause gags are fun, if a tad exaggerated.

Floofydawg · 03/05/2024 13:26

I've just finished it. Didn't enjoy it as much as her others, but not sorry I bought it.

Servalan · 03/05/2024 13:33

I’ve just finished on audible. Wasn’t gutted - It rattled along OK and was diverting, but it seemed a bit thin on ideas. There’s usually more tension and usually more complex issues explored in her books. There are other books of hers that I’d return to, but don’t think I’d revisit this.

Thought you were referring to the excellent Sheryl Crow song Grin

igomeow · 01/06/2024 13:39

I've just finished it, not my favourite but made me laugh, I thought her sequel to Rachel's holiday was better. I wonder who she'll focus the next book on, Helen has always been a stand out character to me.

igomeow · 01/06/2024 13:43

My favourite of hers is Rachel's Holiday, can anyone recommend anything as good?

burnoutbabe · 01/06/2024 13:57

The last 150 pages just dragged like anything.

It was just "when will he turn up and they get together"

Fairly boring story all round. And long!

The sequel was very good - Again, Rachel.

I am nearly finished with it now. Started off well. I enjoyed the mystery element of who did the damage to the retreat.

But that was resolved in a silly way. I didn't buy the whole Anna-Joey connection. I felt the perimenopause issue been exagerated.

Alright but not one of her best. Saying that it could pick up in the last 50 pages.

healthybychristmas · 23/04/2025 07:51

I thought Helen's story, sorry can't remember the name of it right now, was really awful. I know Marian was suffering very severe depression at the time but I had looked forward to Helen's story for so long and was so disappointed.

11plusinLondon · 23/04/2025 08:26

Really disappointing. I got half way through and gave up.

AlphaRadiationIsHeliumNuclei · 23/04/2025 08:34

I was also disappointed, but because I thought the character of Anna had completely changed, so much as to be unrecognisable from her previous story and from her popping up in the other books.

Dustyblue · 23/04/2025 08:45

I think she is so successful as an author her publishers will print almost anything she does.

Did you read her book 'Saved by Cake'? No, neither did I. And I've also suffered with serous depression

I find her books a bit hit & miss. The Brightest Star in the Sky was awful. This Charming Man was great. The Other side of the Story was good fun. There was another I couldn't finish but the title escapes me.

Dustyblue · 23/04/2025 08:50

Oh that' right- The woman who stole my life & the mystery of mercy close. Not bad if you borrowed from the library but wouldn't spend money on them.

PurpleChrayn · 23/04/2025 09:54

She’s gone off the boil with her last few novels. She’s probably too busy blurbing every other book that gets published!

Energe · 23/04/2025 09:55

I couldn’t finish it. I was the same with her stupid one about the couple splitting up. Can’t even remember the name of it. It has a white cover and was quite thick. I love her but her writing is plodding and boring these days.

igomeow · 23/04/2025 10:18

Im looking really forward to The Tv series coming out about The Walsh Sisters. I think I read the first series will cover the story of Rachel’s Holiday and Is There Anybody Out There.. Two of my favourites. I hope they do the book’s justice.

I enjoyed the story, but would agree with this. Anna was so sweet, people obviously change with time but she was incredibly different.

Latenightreader · 23/04/2025 14:31

I thought Anna changed a lot between her appearance in earlier books (sweet, very dizzy, permanently stoned) and Is Anybody Out There where she's working at a fairlyhigh level in marketing. We start to see the transformation (in Angels?)but I struggle to work out how much time passes between books as it doesn't always seem to fit.

Yes! She does a lot of that doesnt she? Just borrowed a random library book, looks interesting and sure enough on the cover is "A gripping, compulsive page-turner MARIAN KEYES". Wonder how much she was paid for
those 5 words!

UpUpUpU · 24/04/2025 02:33

I started this on holiday a couple of weeks ago. Got half way through and can’t pick it back up again. I’m finding it quite dull.
