UPDATE: BOOKCLUB DISCUSSION NIGHT NOW ON THURSDAY EVENINGS - November Bookclub will be Thursday 29th November

Its not because Tuesday is Spooks night, honest...

We've decided to move our bookclub chat to Thursday evenings, so that it fits with the newsletter (and gives us a few crucial extra reading days).

So our November bookclub session will move from Tuesday 27th to Thursday 29th November - and from now on we'll get together on the last Thursday of each month. Still the same time, 8pm- 10pm.

Does that still suit all bookclubbers? Hope there isn't too much of a problem switching nights - if there is, please get in touch.

And if there's something brilliant on telly on Thursdays that I'm missing, tell me now...

Nah, you're ok. Grays Anatomy has finished.

zippitippitoes · 21/11/2007 10:37

so what book are u reading had a look at the other thread but it didn't seem very clear

MadamePlatypus · 21/11/2007 10:59

The Gathering. Only just started it, but 'a good read', so don't think will have problems finishing.

CindyMK · 21/11/2007 11:33

I've just finished reading Hidden by Cathy Glass and I've put a bit about it on the non-fiction section. Has anyone else read it? It's by the same author who wrote Damaged, and I think it's amazing. How can I nominate it for the next book of the month?

TillyBookClub · 22/11/2007 20:59

CindyMk, I've been thinking about doing a Mumsnetters Recommend month, maybe in Feb or March which would give us a bit of time to get everyone's nominations. Shall I put Hidden down as your tip? (It'd still be a vote, so might not end up as the BOTM but in with a fighting chance...)

Hope everyone's enjoying The Gathering. I'm trying to see if Anne will come online but it looks like her post-Booker publicity tour is pretty unrelenting. Publicist says an emailed Q&A might be possible, will keep you posted...

bugger.

Tuesday nights were perfect because dp was out at pool all night.

Thursdays not so good, but I'm sure I can manage to sort something out.

CindyMK · 23/11/2007 14:51

TillyBookClub, yes, I think that's a very good idea to put Hidden forward. Cathy Glass writes a very good story, and also the way she deals with the kids is amazing. I've learnt a lot.

TillyBookClub · 24/11/2007 11:18

Great, I've put it on my list, looking forward to reading it...

Squonk, so sorry to mess things up with the dates, really hope you can join us...

Bugger...I'm out this Thursday...although won't be usually. Surely you're all watching Californication on Thursdays followed by Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip...US TV doesn't get any better!

Won't be able to do the upcoming chat, but I' just finishing The Gathering, so will post some thoughts beforehand.

TillyBookClub · 26/11/2007 20:24

we'll miss you, notyummy, v sad you can't make it but looking forward to hearing what you thought...

Also very sadly, Anne Enright cannot join us on Thursday night due to prior commitments, but we're hoping to email a brief Q&A to her, so everyone do think about what you'd like to ask her.

Just a reminder to anyone who's dropped by that November's Bookclub chat will be at 8pm this Thursday 29th November and we'll be discussing the Booker Prize winner, The Gathering...

See you then x

Flamesparrow · 26/11/2007 20:28

T'will be fine until ER starts up again

I couldn' get hold of this month's

Sashie · 28/11/2007 17:48

I've read Hidden by Cathy Glass too. I am a new foster carer and learnt a lot. Her books are so gripping you can't put them down. I think she has a lot to teach us as parents and carers.

TillyBookClub · 28/11/2007 19:57

All lurking extremely welcome (but erm, don't necessarily count on us for the erudition...)

ER is starting up again? Is gorgeous George going to make an appearance or is he way too busy doing expresso ads? V sad you couldn't get your mitts on a copy, flamesparrow, but please join us next time - have you voted for December BOTM? Agent Zig Zag currently in the lead, and its a brilliant read.

40 more pages to go...

Notyummy · 29/11/2007 11:43

Ok, not much time, but a few random thoughts on The Gathering.

Overall enjoyed it, although it nearly lost me in places. Struggled to like any of the characters, although that is not a criticism, as it means they have been laid bare with all their flaws.

I still haven't decided what the Gran's culpability was...did she know about the abuse, and was the abuse directed at the Mother as well as grandchildren?

Was the abuse a form of 'punishment' for the Gran for her percieved rejection of the male character (can't remember his name, and I am at work without book!)

I am still a bit confused about the hospital (bit dense ) Was the mother sent there whilst depressed?

Any answers to my questions tonight when you discuss will be gratefully received. I will have a look when I get in from my Thai meal!
