Best crime/ thriller you've ever read?

I love police procedurals, crime and psychological thrillers, but I'm struggling to find something new! I feel like I've read everything! Am tired of the "twist you'll never see coming!" which one inevitability does, else it's just not interesting to truly grip!

Please help!

A little different, but police procedurals none the less -
Martin Cruz Smith's Arkady Renko books about a Russian police detective, generally set in Moscow.
Start with 'Gorky Park'.
Mostly set in Soviet times, 80s, but there are also some more modern.

The David Raker series by Tim Weaver are excellent.

Would really recommend Tuesday Falling by S Williams.

RobiN0963 · 09/12/2020 11:13

Thank you for sharing. I also love crime books

I just wanted to revive this thread to see whether there are any more books people would recommend!

I've worked my way through a few of the suggestions here that I'd not previously read, and now I need more!

Harriet, as before:
The Artemis File by Adam Loxley
Gentlemen & Players by Joanne Harris
Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz

All British, all brilliantly written and all with cracking plot twists!

LazyDaisy10 · 21/01/2021 20:54

I'd recommend Nicci French
Mark Billingham, Simon Kernick, Matt Brolly

SnowFields · 21/01/2021 20:57

You might also like Tess Gerrison, Lisa Jackson, and Lisa Gardner.

MollyWindley · 21/01/2021 21:09

I like some of the suggestions you've already got, I'd add:

The Reykjavik murder mystery series by Arnaldur Indridason, the main detective Erlendur is introverted and engimatic...I will warn you that some of the stories are incredibly sad, but always rather beautiful.

Probably my favourite though is Barbara Nadel's Cetin Ikmen series, all set in Turkey, they're detailed with an incredible sense of place, and Cetin Ikmen is just wonderful, there's supposed to be a tv series coming soon, and I'm so torn, I want more people to know the stories but I'm terrified at seeing a character I love on screen, it so often is a dissapointment!!!

@Todaywewilldobetter

Both of Elly Griffiths's series are excellent! My top recommendations! Plus.. The Vera books Dalziel & Pascoe The series by Jonathan Kellerman and by Fay Kellerman are ok Blood Orange was great - standalone thriller Cara Hunt & Karin Slaughter both reliably good
I adore cara hunter, her new one is on order. Caz frear is excellent also.

I love this genre and stumbled across Helen Fields series starting with 'Perfect remains' bloody loving it so far. Brilliant.

Yes Macbrides Logan series is fantastic but beware of it involving children.

Thanks for the thread OP I've got a fair few lined up for when I've finish Helen Field's next 5 !!

Iooselipssinkships · 10/02/2021 09:59

I'm really enjoying S. E. Lynne's books at the moment along with K. L Slater, Shalini Boland and JP Delany. I love a good psychological thriller!

BurtonHouse · 13/02/2021 19:53

I second Blood Orange by Harriet Tyce.
As someone who hoovers up crime fiction this is one of a few (mostly Barbara Vine & Ian Rankin) that have stuck with me. I keep trying to press it on friends and family, but they are not big readers.

And then there were none by Agatha Christie.

The lady vanishes by Ethel Lina White , should be read in one sitting to get the full effect.

L J Ross- Crime series set in Northumbria

Ghislainedefeligonde · 19/09/2021 19:15

Have you come across The Silent Daughter by Emma Christie? It was shortlisted for mcillvaney prize at this weekend’s bloody Scotland festival and it’s a great read with lots of twists and also great characters.

I also love the Strike books, and Val McDermid.
I’ve also recently started reading Laidlaw by William mcillvanney, often thought of as where it all started for the tartan noir movement

Ohsotirednurse · 19/09/2021 20:33

Anything by LJ Ross- Thriller series set in Northumbria

Valenciaoranges · 05/11/2021 21:13

Mr Mercedes - Stephen King
Rachel Lynch
Patricia Gibney
Charly Cox
Victoria M Patton
MJ Arlidge

Spitspotsput · 17/12/2021 22:14

Anxious People by Fredrik Backman. Completely mad mix of events. Quite confusing and emotional and the whodunnit is hard to work out due to all the twists and turns.

XingMing · 23/08/2022 15:14

To resuscitate a zombie thread, my two latest crime/thriller discoveries are Chris Hammer (Australian... three novels) and Joel Dicker (Swiss) three novels translated so far. All well-written, and not too predictable. And fairly lengthy.

I've read almost everything mentioned upthread to establish my credentials.

Suedomin · 23/08/2022 15:22

I loved all of Minette Walters early novels, The Ice House, Dark Room, the Sculptress, Scolds Bridle were my favourites.

XingMing · 23/08/2022 15:37

More recently, the two novels about the Black Death and this year's book, about the English Civil War (The Harrier and the Swift, iirc) are also good reads but historical thriller-ish, linked by Dorset settings @Suedomin Love the username BTW!

Annasgirl · 23/08/2022 15:42

The best books - and I’ve read nearly all the rest on this thread - are by Steve Cavanaugh. The Eddie Flynn series. Thirteen is the most famous.

Also, all the books by Chris Pavlone - I’ve just read his latest, the brilliant Two Nights in Lisbon - so good I was going to give it its own thread!!!
