I love police procedurals, crime and psychological thrillers, but I'm struggling to find something new! I feel like I've read everything! Am tired of the "twist you'll never see coming!" which one inevitability does, else it's just not interesting to truly grip!

Please help!

@BillyAndTheSillies I second Lucinda berry, I love her books, but I found Saving Noah was quite uncomfortable reading

HarrietPotterska · 08/11/2020 15:07

@Sp1ke3

Try Abir Mukherjee’s Wyndham & Banerjee series. Set in early 1920s India.
Just reading the first one in the series now. Am enjoying it Smile.

Will hunt out The Messiah. Tana French is now firmly on the list also.

Seconding the Slough House books.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Denise Mina. She is an amazing writer.

Just finished Place of execution which was excellent
Can't believe O haven't read any Val McDermid before
Any idea what order I should read her books in

DrDavidBanner · 12/11/2020 19:11

Has anyone mentioned Karin Slaughter? Coptown is a corker.

I like Peter James too, I read House on Cold Hill in 2 days and his Roy Grace series is good too.

Mo Hayder scares he bejesus out of me, but I like Minette Walters, Val McDermid and Ann Cleves.

I developing a good reading list here! Grin

@user1487194234 The Distant Echo is a really good read, the first of her Karen Pirie cold case series. I loved it.

StanfordPines · 12/11/2020 22:14

I prefer Val McDermid’a Tony Hill novels.

shinynewapple2020 · 12/11/2020 22:25

Placemarking
I have kindle unlimited and currently reading all the series I can get for free - not all to be recommended
Unfortunately.

Cocolapew · 12/11/2020 22:53

My favourite police series is the Prey series by John Sandford
Also love Harlan Coben, Micheal Connelly, Dennis LeHane, Robert Crais, Alafair Burke, Chelsea Cain, Nelson De Mille, GM Ford, JA Kerley and PJ Tracey.
I also enjoyed the Cara Hunter books and just read The Whisper Man and really liked it.

asparalite · 12/11/2020 22:55

Susie Steiner
Robert Bryndza
Another two I'd add to the recommendations

BillyGoatsChuff · 13/11/2020 09:03

I love the Harry Bosch books (Michael connelly)
Mo Hayder
Karin Slaughter
Tess gerristen
Harlen coben
Linwood Barclay

Anchoredowninanchorage · 13/11/2020 09:10

I found Terry Hayes “I am Pilgrim “ really gripping and would definitely recommend

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 13/11/2020 10:23

Jefferey Deaver is very American, and sometimes repetitive but he's very good at the procedural part of things, the forensic examinations.

Very good in small doses.

Sundaypolodog · 13/11/2020 12:11

Has anyone mentioned Eve Dolan - her books are set around Peterborough area.
John Harvey - local to me - set around Nottingham and Cambridgeshire
Liz Nugent.
The Beck books before google and social media.

George Gently from pre internet times too
Mel Sherratt too

TartanDMs · 13/11/2020 12:18

Definitely recommend the Stuart Macbride books. He's really good at gruesome but realistic characters.

Sharon Bolton is excellent. Leigh Russell is another one I have found fairly gripping.

Cocolapew · 13/11/2020 13:24

Gregg Hurwitz is very good too.

Gem176 · 13/11/2020 15:10

Place marking so I can check this thread before I write my Christmas list!

Gem176 · 13/11/2020 15:25

@TartanDMs @HarrietPotterska agree that Stuart MacBride is excellent but watch out as some of his books feature children as victims. I think I saw you post about not wanting to read anything like that.

shinynewapple2020 · 16/11/2020 17:30

In that case beware of Leigh Russell , I'm normally quite hardened to what I read (as opposed to watching ) but one of her books is quite disturbing about a child slavery trade with the perpetrators in animal masks . This has put me off reading more of her books (think it was Leigh Russell anyway )

Redshoeblueshoe · 16/11/2020 17:38

Adrian Mckinty's Sean Duffy books are brilliant. The Chain is scary, but not one for the OP, as it starts off with a child getting kidnapped, and then it gets very dark.

The Johnny Mann series by lee weeks is a good collection. It's a 4 book series based in Hong Kong. It's a brilliant read
LadyEloise · 19/11/2020 09:17

Minette Walters
Michael Connelly

Smartypoppet · 25/11/2020 11:09

The Artemis File by Adam Loxley
Gentlemen & Players by Joanne Harris
Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz

All British, all brilliantly written and all with cracking plot twists!

Laffinalltheway · 25/11/2020 11:27

I love the Stephen Leather books. The Spider Sheperd series is very good, but the stand alone ones such as Hard Landing, The Long Shot etc. are excellent.

I second the Tony Parsons ones, great reads.
