Best crime/ thriller you've ever read?

I love police procedurals, crime and psychological thrillers, but I'm struggling to find something new! I feel like I've read everything! Am tired of the "twist you'll never see coming!" which one inevitability does, else it's just not interesting to truly grip!

Please help!

@Todaywewilldobetter

This thread is going to cost me a fortune. I love it!
I have to use libraries. ,I couldn't afford all the books I read!
CowGurl · 28/10/2020 21:01

I am LOVING the Jane Casey books at the moment, which a PP mentioned. Great to see so many familiar names. And some new ones!

Just had a trawl through my Audible library:

Michael Connelly - Bosch et al - wish I had these still to read ...
Denzil Meyrick - Only ever listened to these and narrator is brilliant!
Jo Spain
Ben Aaronovitch - Rivers of London - Magical policing in London - sounds strange but they are fab.
Jussi Adler-Olsen
Michael Robotham
James Oswald
John Verdon - I thought 'Think of a Number' was amazing.

Ooh yes the Jane Casey series is fabulous as well, read all of them on holiday last year then was heartbroken when I came home and realised I had finished.

cherrypiepie · 28/10/2020 21:11

Donna leon brunetti books are set in Venice so lovely for a change of scenery so to speak.

Susan hill seriallier is good and tony parson max Wolfe trilogy. Also like the locally set ones so David Marks were set where I grew up.

Also think a place of execution is amazing.

noodlezoodle · 28/10/2020 22:25

Another vote for Michael Connelly's Bosch books, and the Lincoln Lawyer series - fantastic.

I am currently reading the Claire DeWitt mysteries by Sara Gran - they are completely bonkers but I'm really enjoying them, never read anything quite like them before.

ageingdisgracefully · 29/10/2020 13:32

Can I also add Elizabeth George, the author of the Lynley and books?

ageingdisgracefully · 29/10/2020 13:32

Don't know where the "and" came from....

WildCherryBlossom · 29/10/2020 14:59

Has anyone mentioned the Secret History by Donna Tartt yet? It does appear on pretty much every book recommendation thread, whatever the genre. Fits the bill here though, and it is excellent.

WildCherryBlossom · 29/10/2020 15:03

Robert Goddard is usually pretty good for fast paced, gripping thrillers.

ageingdisgracefully · 29/10/2020 16:14

I much preferred Little Friend by Tartt. Goldfinch good too. Long though.

efeslight · 29/10/2020 18:33

I also wanted to mention Stephen Booth, series set in Derbyshire

HarrietPotterska · 29/10/2020 20:18

Thanks so much everyone! I've actually got butterflies thinking of all the new books I'm going to get 😍

Sharon Bolton's books, especially the Lacey Flint series, are excellent. Utterly spine-tingling and beautifully written.

Also Stuart McBride's Logan McRae series. The characters feel so real.

Slightly different , being more spy-ish crime/thriller - the Slough House series by Mick Herron. Exceptionally well written and an utter joy to read.

PetrovYelyenaAndMe · 01/11/2020 23:18

Restless by William Boyd.
Loved it.

Whenlifegivesyoulimoncello · 07/11/2020 18:22

For me I really enjoy Sharon Bolton’s Lacey Flint series, Belinda Bauer and Tana French.

DCIHoops · 07/11/2020 18:58

Seconding Patricia Cornwall ‘scarpetta’ books

Have you tried the Frost books by R.D Wingfield OP? I love them, so well written

TheSandman · 07/11/2020 19:01

The Paying Guest by Sarah Waters

emmetgirl · 07/11/2020 19:04

Ann Cleeves
Peter Robinson
John Harvey
Stephen Booth

All great writers

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 07/11/2020 19:17

Harlen Coben (the Myron Bolitar series)
Dennis Lehanne is an incredible writer and has done a detective series & so many other amazing books
The Girl with the dragon tattoo series
I second Reginald Hill, Micheal Connelly, Jo Nesbo, JKR

HotSauceCommittee · 07/11/2020 19:24

I can recommend Mark Billingham, Steve Cavanagh and Christopher Brookmyer. They have written more than a few books and are consistently good. Thank you for this thread. I'm a big Val McDermid fan.

Alilacat · 07/11/2020 19:51

Please please read the Dublin murders series by Tana French - they are truly superb!!

Alilacat · 07/11/2020 19:53

Also recommend the Michael Connolly Bosch neo-noir series - perfect if you like the idea of a detective looking out over a city, listening to jazz and brooding - v enjoyable Smile

OutOntheTilez · 07/11/2020 20:06

I agree with RigaBalsam about the Alex Delaware novels (Jonathan Kellerman). You may not necessarily get twists and surprises, but for me it's more of the journey because I love Kellerman's writing style and the character Milo Sturgis.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 07/11/2020 20:20

@unmarkedbythat

I'm not sure if it's quite what you're looking for but I have loved some of Christopher Brookmyre's books.

Boris Starling's Messiah is really good imo. And I did not guess the killer before it was revealed.

Not at all police procedural but good mysteries anyway- the Cadfael books.

Came on to say Messiah- absolutely loved it!

Try Abir Mukherjee’s Wyndham & Banerjee series. Set in early 1920s India.
