Book club 2011 - tell us your thoughts, please

Bookclub is taking a break now until January (when we have the brilliant Rose Tremain lined up to come and chat to us - official announcement coming soon). It has been a wildly eclectic year (you can revisit all the books here) with some excellent author chats. Highlights of 2010, for me, were Colm Toibin's magnificent BROOKLYN, Lynn Barber explaining that Penthouse was a far better place than Vogue, and Sebastian Faulks describing himself as a 'frightened rabbit'.

But before we kick off in 2011, we'd like to know all your thoughts on books and bookclub, and how you'd like it to run. What works? What doesn't? What would make our bookclub evening an unmissable event?

Some starters for ten, to get the ball rolling:

Which authors would you give your eye teeth to chat to?

How valuable are the author chats? Could they be better?

Author chats or discussion amongst ourselves - which do you prefer?

Is the evening the right time, or would daytime be easier?

Is discussion night too long/too short?

Is a book a month about right? Need more time to finish?

Paperbacks or hardbacks?

How do you feel about autobiographies/memoirs? Any favourite/non-favourite genres?

Or are you happy with book club as it is?

And finally, what's the best book we've done and what books do you want to see more of?

By the time we kick off next year, I hope we'll have made
bookclub into everything you want it to be. So please don't hold back...

Thanks all for your suggestions - we are going to take a look at everything and make a tweak or two for next year's bookclub. Meanwhile, please keep telling us who you'd like to chat to and what books you might like to feature...

As for January, I can reveal that Orange Prize winning author Rose Tremain will be joining us on Thursday 20 January at 8pm for bookclub webchat, and we'll be discussing her latest book TRESPASS (plus her writing life, her tips on becoming an author and all her other books as well, so gather your questions).

Official January discussion thread and page will be here soon, will keep you posted...

A bit frustrating that Rose Tremain's book is not out in paperback. The release date seems to be 6th January? Or am i wrong... Can anyone point me in the right direction? thanks

gailforce1 · 15/12/2010 18:28

Really looking forward to bookclub restarting so went to the library today to reserve Trespass - I am 17th on the list!! And they are waiting for the books to be delivered!!
So don't know if I will have got my hands on the book let alone read it in time!
Is anyone else having problems?

arentfanny · 15/12/2010 18:36

Gailforce, I process books for our libraries and we are currently about a month behind so don't hold your breath, this is why longer between books would be appreciated.

gailforce1 · 15/12/2010 19:36

Arentfanny thanks for the info - will just have to wait in hope as cannot afford to go and buy hardback copy!

arentfanny · 15/12/2010 22:38

gailforce, I know where you are coming from.

It's a bit confusing which is 'the more official' thread for the book club discussions and sometimes you don't have time time to search and read through many. new to mums net so maybe I have missed a link but when you do follow the first links about the book club then you have a list of many htreads. Not sure if the book club is from Mumsnet HQ or from a member starting it - either way, could it have an offiical stamp at the beginning?

Should we be asking paperbacks/hardbacks ... or e-readers like Kindle. I'm a convert!

Paul Auster.
