Please suggest truly full time boarding school with strong international community. ideally with reasonable access / train to london.

he would be applying for year 10 (relocating from dubai because of the turmoil in this part of the world)

child has very strong academics. Would prefer school with strong gcse (75% + grade 7-9)

Fettes? In Edinburgh so maybe too far from London although direct train, plane.

Char1983 · 07/10/2026 12:37

I’d definitely look at Tonbridge and Rugby. Both are very strong academically, genuinely full boarding and have good access to London. I’d also look at Oundle.
For most of these schools, Year 10 entry will be reliant on there being space, rather than being a main entry point. But I wouldn’t let that put you off enquiring.

Most schools are very open to having a conversation, particularly with international families, so I’d ring the admissions teams directly, explain your circumstances and ask what might be possible.

Wellington is a great school and easy access to London but I wouldn't say it is full boarding any more. Most British kids go home at weekends now.

Happy to suggest some others if useful – I specialise in supporting international families with UK school admissions and transitions.

King’s Canterbury

Tonbridge a good shout though I hear from friends that, like Wellington, the British kids do leave for the weekend.

The one that really ticks all your boxes is Eton, but you'd need to ring to see if there's a space or to get on a waiting list.

Xiaoxiong · 07/10/2026 16:18

Though you'll have to ring round schools regardless for a year 10 entry! So you might as well call the one that's closest to Heathrow just on the off-chance.

It also does make life easier if you use a consultant like @Char1983 (other consultants obvs available) as they can support you with the legwork.

Hello, echo above. I went to Oundle recentlyish - I would recommend this one as best full boarding coed in UK and right academic level for you. Im not sure if want coed or all boys though. Tonbridge in fact I wouldn't recommend from a full boarding persepctive as lots do go home it's more weekly, academics brilliant. Rugby full boarding too and good academics but I do prefer Oundle (I considered it and Marlborough when looking and have lots of friends whove gone to these two as well), good train links to London and airport. Marlborough also a good option but maybe too low for you academically.

Will stress there are now very few single sex or coed full boarding schools so it will only be a small pool.

My list would be

Single
Eton (likely no space)
Radley
Winchester
Harrow

Coed:
Oundle
Rugby
Wellington

Give all a ring though. Good luck :-)

Christs Hospital not far from Gatwick with its own rail station and a direct train from the airport.
Co ed and decent academics. A good mix of international and non international pupils and is a full boarding school - you need a good reason to take them out on a non exeat weekend. They also keep a house open for international pupils over exeat so you don't have to appoint a guardian.

THey have to be OK with the uniform though.....

CosyTraybake · 07/10/2026 21:38

The Christ hospital uniform is kind of rad and cool tbh I don’t get the hate much better than classic boring suits

nixon1976 · 07/10/2026 21:51

Tonbridge is really not a full boarding school in the sense you mean.

DebatingoffKent · 08/10/2026 14:17

Sevenaoks School - definitely ticks your international community / academic / easy access to London criteria.

MissyB1 · 08/10/2026 14:22

Dean Close Cheltenham, plenty of internationals, definitely full boarding, Co Ed, 2 hour direct train to London.

I love it as DD and her friends but they do need to get their head around it before they go.

Core Distinctions in this Group

My DC go to Repton now in year 13 and 11 - so in their final a level and gcse years. Truly is full boarding - 1 exeat weekend a half term and only allowed 1 PW a half term….traditionsl set up of Tuesday and Thursdays afternoon co-curricular. Saturday morning school followed by full school fixtures, socials / activities arranged for all year groups over the weekends. Only circa 20% Day pupils who fully integrated into boarding houses and often stay until 9pm most nights to do prep etc. It’s a happy school and both my DS and DD are very happy boarders. Easy to get back to London from as well.

CosyTraybake · 10/10/2026 13:35

This is old btw think 2025 Oundle is higher this year I just checked… but give a good indication also strike out tonbridge and charterhouse from there not full boarding schools.

good luck op!

TheCricketers · 10/10/2026 19:48

Oundle is useless for Heathrow.
Cab you fly to Dubai from Stansted?

Wellington is NOT a full boarding school.

Yes, you can fly from Stansted to Dubai; that's 1hr 10ish in the car from Oundle

Lots of students fly from Heathrow at Oundle, it's not that bad! I think it's 1hr 45 to Heathrow in a car. Maybe 2 on a bus. These are put on before holidays specifically for Heathrow by the school, there are also ones to Stansted (or they train it depends but it's all pretty efficient in my experience)
