What if your "local catchment school" is shit?

Well it depends how shit really. If it was actually completely dire, and I mean really bad probably mostly because of lots of trouble rather than something like below average exam results, then I guess some people would apply for the next closest school. But mostly people automatically just send their kids to whatever school they fall under the catchment for 🤷🏻‍♀️

There is no chance of whatsoever that I would have sent my children to a shit school. If you think that's a "weird obsession" then that's odd. If you happily send your child to a shit school just because it's the local one isn't doing the best for your child IMO (yes, I know the system is different in Scotland)

my son is one of two and is a twin one is quite bright the other one not so much.

Sure.

You post a lot about schools, yet have quite a weak grasp on the English language yourself.

Well I would rather not bring anxiety and pressure to my child's life, not to mention my own, by getting incredibly worked up about a school place or forcing them into things like entry exams at such a young age. For what really? So you can tell yourself you're a better parent? Bragging rights about how your child goes to this or that school? Our kids are doing just fine without any of that shite.

this thread is an absolute education in “the other half”; what on earth is wrong with the good state schools near you? Do you feel you are better than that?

Funny you should say this. I've found the thread an education in how unkind people can be- motivated by what? The suggestions of St Cakes, Grange Hill, Hogwarts, Roedean (in a dress), a Tim Nice-but-Dim school- and the hostility toward the op (and DS) for asking these questions really saddens me as I'd always seen MN as a place where people who are experienced or knowledgeable offer helpful advice, not catty, sparky comments.

@WaftherAngelsthroughtheskies you are not allowing for the ability to read between the lines which develops here after a while, some posts/ers being more
obvious than others.

The very first response, as you know, was 'face facts'. That's pretty sharp.

Stowe would be worth a look I think.

sheep73 · 23/07/2024 06:43

If Shrewsbury did not take him based on academics then he had no chance at the others. Look at Stowe, Canford etc.
Who is advising you on school selection?

Bugsbunni · 24/07/2024 19:22

slightly unrealistic. Its harder than most of the schools (bar Winchester) listed. Some brilliant schools out there with similar results. Get some feedback and trying working on it. You can still apply to a lot of schools in Year 7.

Bugsbunni · 24/07/2024 19:24

not many places left in good schools and a ramp up in overcrowding in the state sector. People should be careful what they wish for... the DD and DS in state are about to get swamped and no one is going to win. Thanks to Keir and his unreviewed data caring not a jot for the public or impact on the public purse longer term. Education guaranteed on a downwards spiral

And the promise to fix education by using priv school VAT to simply “hire more teachers”. The VAT is collected … when?
then “hire more teachers” with the VAT … and sometime, in years to come … the state sector improves because more teachers = better education? It just doesn’t make sense, don’t think the state sector problem is “not enough teachers. “

Bugsbunni · 25/07/2024 07:57

Absolutely agree on Bradfield. They have a great rep if your child has SEN requirements. They are a very hands on school. There are plenty of other great schools that are also highly selective not on your list

Genevieva · 27/07/2024 08:36

Your previous choices suggest you like traditional boarding schools. I’d suggest you look at King’s Canterbury, Sherborne and King’s Bruton.

Hogwarts?

Why are you being mean? Surely, you can just ignore if you have no constructive advice to give.

HairyToity · 15/08/2024 22:51

Where are you? Is he sporty? If he is sporty then he might enjoy Ellesmere College.

@PerkyExpert any update available? Interested in if you found the setting for your son?
