hi guys i am really in a sticky situation at the moment, we thought our son was bright enough for these schools but clearly not so. Any ideas what i should do?

Why is it ok for people to be nasty to the OP? Openly mocking and deriding them?
Because they want to pay for boarding school?
Those of you that have made sneery comments, or posted 'joke' fictional schools, why? Do you feel better bullying someone so long as they have more money than you? Are you raising your children to be similarly nasty? What does it say about your own emotional intelligence?

OP, I think the advice to seek feedback from Shrewsbury then look realistically at non-academic boarding schools. It's important your son sees this as a challenge to be overcome, not an actual disaster. These things happen, it's how you deal with the situation, and overcome it, that counts. Good luck.

mrscoffee · 19/07/2024 12:44

Think about his strengths and find a school that will nurture him and appreciate him. He will only thrive in an environment he is happy in.

PollyPeachum · 19/07/2024 12:45

If real:
Bloxham Stowe or Oundle.
Bloxham used to be popular with farmers.

If you really don't know your way around the independent school choice, talk to Gabbitas. That's their job to advise.

If you think they are a troll, report it.

OP could be dyslexic for example.

Also, you don't need a capital P for public school.😂 People in glass houses, eh?

Look at their other threads.

I'm not the one whingeing that my son couldn't get in to a Public school.

Many Americans think public {lower case} means one anyone can attend.

deviantfeline · 19/07/2024 12:47

The child appears to not be clever enough for such schools

Local comprehensive might have him.

I think you are judgemental.
Not everyone uses perfect English on forums. They could have a learning difficulty, so maybe think on that before mocking.

Your excuse for using American English is rather weak.

Everyone thinks their children are above average. They can't all be.

Why do you feel the need to send him away? In what ways will this be better for him?

What do you feel is wrong with the schools near you?

He has been rejected several times - more rejection won't help his MH.

Send your child to the local catchment area high school and stop this weird obsession that England has with "good" schools? Can't imagine the pressure such young children are put under to perform.

The usual England-bashing because no other country on earth tries to do what they perceive is the best for their children! You really are magnificently ill-informed!

Fleetheart · 19/07/2024 13:05

@JudgeJ - scarcely! You know there is untold damage inflicted on (usually) boys sent to these schools from a young age; and yet we Brits lap it up and usually elect these damaged people as our leaders. Not a great idea as they have no idea how the other half live and carry on their Boarding School feuds with them into govt. Cf Boris and Dave.

OP's child has already been offered Eton and others.

Boarding schools now have moved on a very long way from when those people you mention went to them.

One of my former partners went to boarding school from 7 and would agree with some of what you said, but they thoroughly approved of the way GOOD modern boarding schools work.

Some parents because of work (Forces etc) have little option other than boarding schools.

It is confusing though because on another thread the OP said DS had offers at Westminster and Eton. So I am not sure what more they are looking for.

IdeallySunnyPleaseToday · 19/07/2024 14:53

@PerkyExpert If you have said on other threads of yours that your son has several offers of places from other good schools, why is he still sitting exams for others?

What exactly do you want from a school and why can't you pick one of those where he's been offered a place?

It's very confusing to put it mildly.

PerkyExpert · 19/07/2024 15:44

my son is one of two and is a twin one is quite bright the other one not so much.

Could you explain why you don't want to send your son to any of the schools who have accepted him?

Posters are struggling to understand what you're wanting from your questions.

thank you bedes does seem amazing i will definitly have a look

Tonbridge will be a lot more selective than Marlborough or Shrewsbury.

Ah ok didn't know that. Tonbridge is such a run down and god awful town that I forget that the school is actually decent.

I'm not at all ill-informed and I just knew somebody would have something to say about parents just doing what they think is best. The obsession with schools in England is unreal. Here almost everyone just sends their kids to the local catchment school and there's mostly no drama. There's none of this madness regarding school places or forcing young children into tutoring or taking exams to get into a fancy school. Some people even move house to try and get a place at a school?? It's crazy. And parents here aren't any less interested in doing what is best for their children.

I wonder if it's to have a semblance of control. I sent mine to the local state schools and they were fine, but if I'd had the money I think I might like to have been able to choose where they went.
I went to private school so I'm very aware how different they are.

You miss the point, either deliberately or thorough poor comprehension! It's not only we Britons, to be correct, whose children are sent away to boarding school, it's just another way of kicking this country

What if your "local catchment school" is shit?

Have you tried St Trinian's?

I so wanted to go there when I was a kid. Well that or Mallory Towers. Just went to the local comp in the end.
