Radley Socials

Hi there - am looking for any views or experiences about Radley socials for our DS for 2026. We've visited a few times and will return for the visiting morning in Michaelmas term where we can visit three socials and meet the tutors.

We are cognisant of the need to take into account different housemasters/length of tenure etc but there's little to no other lived experience information we can find outside of the Radley website videos.

DS is a solid B-team in sports cricket/rugby/football, has the smarts but will need a push to do more than bare minimum (his assumption that his bare minimum is better than average is correct but this approach to life will do him no favours!), loves science and Latin and geography and history, finds maths easy and English a bore. He will definitely be a kid who will appreciate the ability to take time out in his room as needed but is generally very social and amiable, makes friends easily enough. He boards a couple nights a week at his current prep, by choice, and enjoys it. (Not sure if has any relevance but we are based in London, two working parents, living in a v normal little Victorian terraced house, husband also privately educated at Kings in London, not boarding).

We loved C social's housemaster but think he will be moving on soon...

V happy to DM with anyone who has views or experience, thank you!

Just wondering if anyone out there has any info about different Radley socials? Would be so grateful to learn...

Can't help much I'm afraid as DS finished Radley a few years ago now.
But also look at the PHM's too, not just the HouseMaster.
Other things to think about - according to DS, is the distance from Hall and the size and location of the social patch!
I hope a current parent comes along to help soon...

HorizonDrive · 28/06/2024 12:37

@iamsoshocked Super kind of you to chime in - thank you! Will definitely make sure to look across PHMs and HMs, good call.

Whilst Radley spreads boys from the same prep school out across socials, be aware that this is not the case for families. Until recently, for example, there were about 6 siblings and first cousins in one social. Lovely boys and a lovely family I'm sure, but obviously a significant influence on that social and a question worth asking.

HorizonDrive · 28/06/2024 14:56

@NeedingCoffee ah interesting, thank you.

bloody hell! 6 kids at Radley £££££££££££££££££

iamsoshocked · 30/06/2024 14:50

must be twins involved as Radley only covers 5 years.

NeedingCoffee · 30/06/2024 15:27

It included first cousins 🤣🤣

Re-upping this given we now need to confirm top three choices so if there are any current Radley parents out there with any opinions or info they'd be willing to DM about Houses I would be very grateful! At the moment post several visits DS v much favours A with a host of others jostling for second/third, inc L, H, C and B.

Thank you!

We went for A, D, J in no particular order - really wanted a hm who would see ds through

HorizonDrive · 01/11/2024 11:17

@Cornygirl ok, thank you!

I agree with other posters that it is a good idea to try to work out if the HM is likely to be there for the whole of your child's time at the school. Mind you friends thought they had chosen well at another school and then after only one year the HM went to another school as a Deputy Head Master and the replacement was rather different in character.

HorizonDrive · 11/12/2024 12:55

@SpoonyAmberSheep that's the rub isn't it - all a gamble!

Hi

I saw your mumsnet message re Radley from 2018. Your description of your son sounded so incredibly similar to mine and I wondered if your son did end up at Radley, what were his thoughts on the various Socials?! We're currently trying to decide!

Many thanks

Victoria

I would if you'd mind sharing any info re Radley Socials with me. We're currently looking for our eldest🙏

Does DS play an instrument? Mine plays two and so I chose socials not too far from the music school.
Are they a child that appreciates calmness and space? You could choose one of the socials that are further out.
Do they prefer to be in the middle of things? Choose one of the socials in the centre.

I would also consider the tutor’s character and whether you think it would be a good fit with your DS’s character. This was important to us when deciding, more than whether their tenure would be until the end of DS’s time there. Also you could look at what sports your ds enjoys and which sports the tutors are involved with.
Does the tutor teach one of DS’s favourite subjects?
Does the tutor have very young children that might lead him to spend less time with the boys? I have no idea if this happens, but I wouldn’t be surprised given how all-consuming little children can be.
How much would your DS enjoy a flooded Astroturf outside his social? Great fun if he’s into football.
Does the social have its own outdoor space, and is this important to you and ds?
You could also look at where they have their barbecues, Is there a dedicated space? Is it in the tutors back garden? Do they go to a neighbouring social?

I found the videos really helpful in my decision.

My ds hasn’t started yet so that’s all the advice I can offer, though I hope my questions help.

@HorizonDrive I realise that this is now almost one year on for you, but it would be great to hear which socials you chose and why? We are now in the same position for 2027 entry and it would be great to hear what you discovered. Perhaps I could DM you if easier and you don't mind? Many thanks
