BAFTAs - discussion for black/brown mumsnetters

This is obviously a very sensitive subject, as it involves the impact of racist language and disability.
So, I’m making this thread for MNers who are black or brown, brown because brown people have been referred to as the N word as well historically and may want to weigh in.

for any who don’t know, the summary is, a well known disability advocate who struggles with Tourette’s, and is part of the film ‘I swear’, was at the BAFTAS, and involuntary ticced the N word at two black male actors.

there is already a nearly full thread, with lots saying that people shouldn’t be offended as this is involuntary.

I completely agree that tics are involuntary and that Tourette’s is such a difficult condition to struggle with. However, I disagree that you can’t be offended and that it can’t be experienced as racist still, even if unintentional!

More delusion on the main thread:
Editing out the N word is censorship and akin to putting disabled people in asylums.
John Davidson was 'segregated' when he left the Baftas voluntarily.
White people should be allowed to use the N word as rap stars do.

This is why we need Black History Month.

I really don’t get why some Yt are so desperate to use racial slurs towards black people because SOME black people have turned it into a term of endearment among themselves.

Why do they not understand consent? And if editing the N word would be censorship why is editing out Free Palestine not.

Why do they not understand “consent”?

This is why I hid all the main threads on the topic. Just racists being racist.

Yet you simply questions made around the list of invitees and your comment is deleted.

Isn't that other thread finished. I purposely used up about 8 of the posts to kill it.

Oh it reached 40 pages? I guess the racists really came out to play!

Ok.

I was disgusted by that thread. JD would not have meant abuse, but his tic insults are informed by culture. When he shouts that word, it’s a reminder to all black people that THAT is how too many people think. JD’s brain knew that word was the correct one to bring black people down at a time of celebration of their achievements. Because that idea is in culture.

whether JD meant offense is not the point. The point is that his words were a reminder of a racist culture.

JHound · 24/02/2026 19:17

StuffyHuffyPuffy · 24/02/2026 19:07

There are so many comments used to defend the incident, that stand above the rest, in the worst way.

The one you have mentioned, where editing out the word censors JD, is one of the many that makes me believe that more people hate us than I originally thought.

Seriously, what am I doing on this site?

There are some good interactions on some topics but anti-blackness is a societal norm and this site is not immune to that.

It’s why I am selective in the threads I frequent and use the “Hide” function regularly.

Delroy Lindo in Sinners: " White people like the blues just fine. They just don't like the folks who make them".

Okay I hadnt seen the other threads, apart from the one started to raise awareness of tourettes but she was detailing her daughters tourettes and how they impact her.

I have now found 2 other threads both 40 pages long. I couldn't read them all. There are some absolutely awful comments and the lack of understanding and lack of awareness of people's own privilege is astounding.

It is possible to be aware of the horrors experienced by disabled people and until as late as 1970s they weren't entitled to an education in UK. And still many are locked up in institutions, and there is systematic trauma caused by our systems to disabled people

But it is not the same as the harm caused to blacks, that also continues unabated who also experience systematic harm and systems based institutionalised racism. Its endemic. And the history behind it and the massive dismissal of it that continues now. White people seem to say well on paper we gave you rights so shut up about racism and colonialism and the ongoing harm.

I dont know how we get people to look outside 'their' bubble. Its beyond the scale of this thread. Its something I can only look at, acknowledge, try to educate my own children about. Try to do better myself.

The BBC and the Bafta organisers themselves are shameful snd some of the stuff I have read on meet is awful I dont think faceless online communication helps. And nuance is hard but bloody hell people are obtuse and seemingly unaware of their own privilege and racism. Ughh honestly I dont have words.

It is possible to hold space for both things, for me at least to understand Andersons tics were not intentional but to also recognise and acknowledge it has caused GREAT harm.

Anyway I will step away, this is not my space. Its also personal to me as I am living through the reality of the exclusion of my own disabled child, and am living the reality of system based trauma.

But some of us at least, see your hurt, I cant ever understand or feel it myself because its not my life, nor my history, but I can regonsise the hurt and the part my own white history and upbringing plays in it.

Well look at that @Justinemumsnet your moderators have deleted my response to a poster who came on to this thread make a personal attack on another poster but you leave the offending post in place. Appalling judgement, on your teams part.

BigOldBlobsy · 24/02/2026 19:56

@clickthatNo one is saying he is racist, still said a racist word though. Intent doesn’t erase impact.

The modding on this thread has been weird to say the least when considering what has been removed.

You deleted again too 😂 But the trash that popped into call out another poster gets to stay.

I am being deleted for a comment that does not even breach any guidelines. I presume it’s simply the admin’s own anti-black bias pushing a weird interpretation of the posts against the guidelines.

Personal insults, clearly against guidelines are left standing. Discussion of the BAFTA’s approach to inclusivity is deleted.

Absolutely batshit.

I think that ultimately, people have loved that a space was created by the BBC where screaming racist abuse at Black people was deemed as fine and justified.

They don't give a shit about disabilities or tourette syndrome 🤷🏽‍♀️

Oh I see the feminism and white women's rights board has now waded into the debate. Comparing it to their favourite subject of trans people, naturally.

This is why they also think editing the slur is “ableist”.

It’s not about JD it’s about indulging their own anti-blackness in an acceptable way.

Its amazing to me how many supporters of Tourettes there are. And how many people are just desperate to use the N word because Jamie Foxx used it. I mean, why?
Surely you have other hobbies?

Always. And it'll be the same people who are now suddenly concerned with disability rights, that suddenly became "feminists" when they were able to use it as a stick to bash transwomen with.

No interest in making lives better for disabled people, no interest in actually dismantling the patriarchy. Absolutely interested in using these causes when it suits them to push another community down.

They will jump on any cause if they can compare it to the "struggles" of white feminists
