Roundabout flags

Do any of you live anywhere where the roundabouts have been painted with England flags? I'm lucky enough to live in an area where this hadn't happened but I think I'd feel awful seeing this everywhere so I'm sending solidarity and hope you are all OK.

How do you feel seeing them? The anti foreigner sentiment is making me feel very uneasy.

I honestly don't think you need to fear anything. Just live your life, be kind to everyone you meet. A good name is better than gold or silver. We should be extremely prayerful in these times, fear God and not man. :)

The issue with this country, and perhaps it's judgement from God, is that they have forgotten their Christian roots and now that it's been 'taken over' (according to the English) by Muslims and immigrants they're unhappy.

Also they're flagging it in protest to all the immigrants coming over who are then committing crime and not benefiting the country.

Immigration in our (grand)parents day was soo different compared to the immigration system today - and is not being done wisely. If you look at Singapore as an example, they are VERY strict on who comes in, who gets PR etc and the country is THRIVING - most people want to live there. Whereas here in the UK, it has gone DOWNHILL (everyone whether black, white, brown is saying the same thing). I look at my childhood days with great nostalgia.

Maggiethecat · 29/08/2025 12:59

I’m always bemused by immigrants who try to set themselves apart from other immigrants.
Beware of immigrant hierarchy and whose agenda it serves.

You regard your childhood with nostalgia but I wonder if your parents and grandparents viewed their early days in the UK with such fondness.
Or were they not subject to the same tropes facing modern day immigrants - of being lazy, here to take away jobs or to claim benefits, of dubious intention at best or criminally minded at worst?
And if you persist in thinking that they were welcome with open arms and applauded for the great contribution they were making to society remind yourself of the recent debacle with the Home Office and Windrush immigrants.

NewNameNigel · 30/08/2025 18:29

My dad's memories of arrival certainly aren't of being opened with open arms and he was a 9 year old boy who had no choice.

Compared to the 70s and 80s things aren't as bad, on one level, but they are pretty fucked up now and will get much worse in my opinion.

I live Surrey and see them on the odd bridge or roundabout with a England flag scrawled, its a confident far right that has been growing in confidence since Brexit. I'm sure a few are insecure white English people who have been radicalised that all their problems are due to asylum seekers , and anti English 'woke media', despite most media in this country sitting firmly on the right with an anti black agenda.-Sun, Telegraph, Mail, Express, Metro, Evening Standard, Times

I was in a shop today, white shop assistant was friendly enough and tried to upsell me to join the shops award scheme , so I did and he said, after I gave my first name, 'Now, that was the easy one, I suspect your surname is going to be tricky for me to type'. I replied yes , its a weird spelling, *went on to spell out a very common English as English rose surname , like thousands of West Indian background black people, my name is very English. The look on his face...

I think the above sums up England today, back in the day it was neo nazi skinheads chasing our parents, and grandparents down the streets, police killing us in cells, now its all gaslighting.

I think that Rylan interview sums up the majority of white English people right now, they will tell you they have NO PROBLEM with legal immigration and say its the asylum seekers taking the piss, unvetted terrorists and rapists and child sex pests. Social media and print media have done a brilliant job demonising and radicalising middle England.

This! As if the racists who are putting up flags care about “good” immigrants. They are targeting anyone who isn’t white and they don’t care whether you’ ve just arrived or whether you were born here.

I feel nervous about things for my family and friends who are not white especially for Muslims as our city mosque was targeted more worrying is the fact that a local Facebook page is allowing posts that are full of racist crap and Islamicphobic crap encourage people to make Muslims and asylum seekers life difficult as they pay their housing costs. Not true because home ownership in our city is high in the Muslim community
this eve sat there was an emergency protest by the usual mob because they claim a local woman was threatened by an asylum seeker with a gun and the police did not respond the new thing they did was play god save the king to offend the few anti racists protesters
one woman on the anti side claimed she is not racist as she has black husband while being with a group of people chanting Tommy Tommy. I hope her husband does not have his life ruined because of a Tommy lie like the grandfather with his white grandkids
some of the Muslim haters turned up to protest Muslims and asylum seekers in taxis driven my Muslims majority of taxis here are driven by Muslims
I hope all of us stay safe physically and mentally

A few years ago the racism may have been more subtle but I feel there has been a shift. There is legitimate concern about allocation of resources to asylum seekers at a time when the economy is in bad shape and people and social services are struggling.
But that said, the latent racism now has a vent through the spotlight on asylum seekers and is bubbling to the surface. Those who, for years wanted to wave their flags, literally and metaphorically, feel emboldened to do so now.

A grand entrance to a park with a sign to the right that reads: Manor Heath Car Park. There are trees and stone buildings and a road leading between stone pillars.

A flag has gone up outside DS' school. A school that is probably the most diverse of all the high schools in our area. Coincidence? I think not. It's truly awful.

Nextweektoo · 04/09/2025 20:38

Quite a lot in our smallish town flags, rather than roundabouts. But then again nit surprising as labour won owing to a huge surge in votes for reform. Definitely makes me feel nervous.

That sounds v stressful- to say the least...☹️ Not black, but hoping it's OK to send a 🫂 It's disgusting people are living in fear due to their skin colour or religion in this day & age. Incredible too that anyone would worship that violent thug Tommy Robinson....

NewNameNigel · 15/09/2025 13:50

I visited my husband's family over the weekend. The village was covered in them and we opted not to go for a drink in the local pub because it was covered in them. I hate that I feel like I can't go for a drink in a pub in my own country.

The article also relays police gratitude to the people who helped them trace the offenders in this nasty incident. Other people were angered enough to take action. So it's not all racism out there but it's racism gets the headlines.

Maggiethecat · 15/09/2025 15:19

🤨
Not sure what your point is. People being racially abused and the increase in racist attacks should be publicised.

Well said @FastQuoter but watch out cos your view won't be tolerated here. You'll be insulted directly and indirectly in an effort to shut you down.
This country permits all types of flags yet it's been framed in people's minds that it is the most dangerous flag. I've traveled and lived in many countries/different continents and this one and the US are the most open and liberal. So liberal the UK's traditional values and culture have mostly been erased. My country of birth has many several tribes. I couldn't image anyone claiming a symbol of a tribe on their land is dangerous and be supported by the leader in saying that. That's Sadiq Khan and Starmer for you.
