Hi,

Has anyone seen this?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cn92znzx8zzo

What do you all think?

Link to the banned advert below:

I am so curious / confused as how this advert got approved?!

A topless man with black skin visible from his torso up covered in a grey clay-like material that is cracked. He is holding his arms across his face as though he is in pain.

Sanex shower gel ad banned over racial stereotype

The TV ad depicted two black models with skin problems and a white model without.

I agree. Seems very shortsighted. How did it get approval in the first place? And why can’t they see how wrong it is?
(disclaimer- haven’t actually seen the ad, but read the story and description of ad).

HelpMeUnpickThis · 20/08/2025 19:37

@somedogsdo - right, this is what I was thinking? As they sat round the table and discussed it, did no one at all think "ummm - hang on?".

Also the Colgate-Palmolive response shows they know nothing at all about D&I,

I hope they get dragged.

That's absolutely shocking

somedogsdo · 20/08/2025 20:30

@HelpMeUnpickThis Exactly! It’s not like they’ve said I’m so sorry we got this really wrong - they’re defending it and can’t seem to see the problem. Crazy! And v disappointing.

I’ve never been able to even look at a Sanex ad since they used small pinholes in it. My daughter also hates it. Maybe we have a phobia but it makes my head itch and my skin crawl. Nothing to do with the colour of the model’s skin, and I’m really getting tired if having to say that.

@abracadabra1980 trypophobia?

@abracadabra1980 I knew I shouldn't have googled it but did anyway. Disgusting and makes me want to tear my skin off.

As for this ad, the extreme dry skin is so...extreme, compared to the fresh, soothing look of the white hydrated skin. The fools should just admit they didn't consider their ad from all angles, and apologise. Instead they're probably sat there complaining that people are too sensitive.

OverheardInAldi · 21/08/2025 16:22

I think these companies do these things on purpose - rage bait. They know it will get people talking on social media, more clicks, more ad revenue. Furthermore, there are little if any consequences for insulting black people so its a win for them. All they have to do once its garnered the attention they want is to offer some half-hearted apology and remove the ad. Wouldn't surprise me if they already had the replacement ad lined up.

CariMaroon · 21/08/2025 18:54

More than anything I think it’s a weird ad that’s been poorly done. Im not sure what they were thinking but it feels like the dry skin is the main focus.

@OverheardInAldi interesting that you say this because when I read the TikTok comments a lot of people were saying they will definitely buy Sanex now because it's "us" being too sensitive and looking for offense everywhere ... it was hard to read that some quarters of the community will actually go out to support Sanex now after this.

What on earth were they thinking? Surely someone noticed it was problematic. And then said and did nothing?

I would absolutely love to know if the marketing and ad teams that produced this were all white people. That would be unlikely in most workplaces now which gives me an even bigger “wtf” moment.

Soooooo subconciously racist
With
Hive minds thinking totally offensively alike
