Inspired by a recent post on Mumsnet and an article I read on Glamour about the amount of money black women spend on hair & beauty services, I was intrigued to find out how much other black mumsnetters spend.

I spend on average;

  • £120 to £150 on protective hairstyle every 3 months (this includes wash, blowdry and extension hair).
  • £50 on wash, steam and trim (every 3 months)
  • £65 on manicure and pedicure as pre-holiday treat (twice a year).

I don't have any facials done or eyebrow threading etc.

Worked out yesterday between skincare, make up, hair being done (one colour and cut in winter, cut in summer), waxing (once a year, also eyebrows once a year), and make up I spent €440 in the last year. I then worked out how much I spent on clothes. €230. Including special black runners for work that cost €170 I’ve edited to add!) I time everything ok, we’ve kids and I prefer to spend on eg their clothes but I can’t help but think (irrationally!) about what I spent in college or as a teen (am 45), and am a bit shocked I don’t get/ do more

Realistically v little over the course of the year as I don't really have a schedule for this. So far I've spent around £230 on my hair this year.

Makeup maybe around £150 a year to replace foundation and primer and the occasional lipstick.

Thread my own eyebrows, keep nails short and usually paint them myself if I can be bothered.

Now perfume.... It lasts a long time so I haven't bought any this year, but I seem to gravitate towards the expensive stuff.

I spend very little on things like hair, since I have been natural for a long time, and keep it quite short. I use black soap to wash my hair with, conditioner, and I make my own hair cream, using shea butter, and a blend of oils, such as castor, apricot kernel oil, etc. No expensive curl creams etc. I do not wear make up either, so no expense there. I tend to buy 1kg of shea butter, and that usually does me good for a year. I don't do my nails, or have any other beauty treatments.

I retie my own microlocs myself every 8-12 weeks, but would love to go to the salon for a retie and a treatment one day. This year I started doing my nails at home rather than getting extensions/BIAB and I'm actually liking how my nails look with regular polish. I also stopped doing my lashes as I kept getting an allergic reaction! Overall I don't spend a lot on myself but would like to.

£5 monthly for haircut @ barbers (short back & sides, natural curls on top)
£32 monthly pedicure
£19 full facial threading monthly
£0 manicure - I do my own and keep my nails natural

I used to spend loads more when my hair was relaxed / cut by a west end stylist. Since I had the big chop ten years ago, I don’t have the time or patience for all that pfaffing about 😂
