Just that really, looking for ideas for company funded Africa Day for work? Any thoughts? I’m hitting a blank wall here so could do with some help. Thanks ☺️

Can you book a speaker to talk about the history, and organise a lunch and learn with food from different African nations?

vladimirVsvolodymr · 12/04/2025 17:14

Thanks for your reply. We’re organising a canteen lunch of African food. Do you mean a speaker to talk about African foods? There’s literally less than 10 black people in my workplace of over 500 staff so basically no one to bounce ideas off.

My previous company organised things like arranging finance experts (Emmanual Asuquo) and UK African authors to come in and do a spot on their specialist subject /area of writing. The finance one was really good & gave insights into saving, stocks and shares etc. The author was great also, they told their story on how they got into writing as an African person in not always a diverse space and gave them publicity too.
Depends on budget of course!

Can you get someone to come in and do an Ethiopian coffee ceremony? We had one at our (London) offices and it was really interesting, the coffee lovers were all delighted as well of course!

I meant someone to speak about the significance of Africa day. Maybe an academic? Search up who lectures in African history at the universities near you.

@Raquelos Mmm, I attended an Eritrean one. Very nice experience...and I'm not even a coffee drinker!

Thanks so much for your replies. That’s interesting. Budget is not an issue more time to organise as we’re about five weeks away and work has been busy lately hence my late reply.
So far we’ve come up with a table quiz for the afternoon after lunch (mix of African foods and snacks . I will look into the coffee ceremony as that will be sure to interest people and should be easy to organise given the time constraint. Will definitely look into getting a speaker for black history month in October. Thanks so much for your help.

@WildBactrian@Raquelos@GreatGatsby212 my apologies for tagging you all but it turns out that there is a theme that the company is going with country-wide. Theme is along the lines of “One Africa, One Health” any ideas? I have a presentation due tomorrow, so planning to tackle this once I’m done with that. Thanks in advance.

Elizabeth Kafaru came to mind. Maybe a talk about plant medicine and the healing properties of different foods?

Or current health initiatives in different regional groups on the continent, e.g. the SADC nations.

Or something environmental, highlighting that looking after Africa means looking after the world? Did they give no pointers or context for the theme?

Maybe invite this professor to speak?

@WildBactrianthank you. No guidance, at least not to my knowledge. Thanks for the tip, will look up your suggestions. I’m in Ireland, so that could make things like travel a bit harder. Thanks again
