A very interesting conversation came up last night at our house over dinner.
We were playing would you rather and one had us all debating.
I am curious what my fellow black mumsnetters would answer. Very light hearted but was a good really good question and had us talking for hours.

Would you rather give up black music or black food?

I said I would give up black food, as much as it is a stable in my diet, being from a Caribbean and African background I could NOT give up black music. Obviously and noted black music covers a wide range of genres and pop music and many others are intertwined with our culture.
I could survive on various food from around the world but black music oooo my days I never could give up!
Other black people I asked today said they’d give up food. So am I alone here?? What do you ladies think?

This is a question for black mumsnetters only!

If this comes up on active, please avoid answering or responding to unless black/mixed and have the lived experience.

Thanks!

I rebuke this question! 😂
I'm currently boiling sorrel, have plantain in the airfryer, and listening to Jill Scott. How can I choose?
I guess I'd say food, as where I live, I can't get a lot of my traditional foods... But does that mean giving up cooking methods? Seasoning?... I mean, I guess I could eat Thai...

I could never give up music! Imagine a day with no Luther, or Vybz, no slow jams. No sah.
Who thought of this question? They like dilemmas and hardship. 😂

ImperialLeather00 · 19/12/2024 18:49

Thanks for answering!
You made me laugh, boiling sorrel, plantain in the air fryer and listening to Jill Scott. Def dilemma!! But one of the two would have to go!!
I couldn’t stop listening to bashment, rare grooves, hip hop, my old skool r&b, UKG, soul, Afro beats, I love it and it’s def a part of me!
But plantain, rice and peas, cornmeal porridge, JUST to name a few….I’d reluctantly lose…

The kids were asking generic would you rather and my brother who had joined us for dinner came out with black food vs black music. I thought it was genius as both are incrediblly important to us as people.

I can give up the food, it'll kill me, but not the music. Music is my life, my sanctuary. I'm going to get that game now. Thanks OP 😃

MotherOfRatios · 19/12/2024 19:34

I'm Black and other than seasoning I don't really eat food from my background, food is easy!

unmp · 19/12/2024 19:35

I'd give up the music rather than the food! I'm not even up to date with the tunes anymore, more gospel etc so would still to hill song and Don Mowen etc but to live on cottage pie all my life! No sah! Blush, I'm too much of a foodie that to be possible!

Though I guess I would have to find other similar cuisines if pushed on the food side like curries which are similar to our stew and rice, biryani roti's like patty, noodles like indomi etc!

ImperialLeather00 · 19/12/2024 19:43

@CottonbudQueen you are welcome 🤗

@MotherOfRatios I think food def easiest!

I meant to say people I had asked today said they’d give up music for reasons @unmp had mentioned. They ate a lot of cultural food and the thought of toad in the hole forever didn’t appeal 😂

Can't say I blame them. Bland food is one of my pet hates and sucks the joy out of life 🤣

ImperialLeather00 · 19/12/2024 20:00

@unmp I agree and your cottage pie comment made me reconsider for a sec.. But life without black music would suck even more joy out of life- to me that is 😂
Id eat it gladly if I could still have my jams playing in the background.

No oxtail?
No ackee & saltfish? No carrot juice
No jerk anything?

Sorry absolutely not happening. I'll listen to the rest of the world rather than deprive my taste buds of real joy 😂

Great question, will steal for Xmas dinner

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 20/12/2024 00:15

This is an awful and wicked dilemma but as the wife of a DJ imma say food has to go however he loves his belly and I'm almost certain his answer would be to give up music.

I'll be eating Indian food heavily to get a likkle curry chicken essence. I'm sure Sainsbury's has some ready meal rice and peas & curry goat I'd resort to too.... that could never be counted in as our food on a regular day lol.

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 20/12/2024 00:22

I stand corrected. He said he refuses to debate as the two go together. Spoil sport!

My sister, who lives for cooking some real HARD food said music goes...without missing a beat.

💯

No curry goat and rice and peas or yam and banana? No brown stew chicken? No red peas soup? No fried fish and festival or bammy? No fish tea? No sorrel at Christmas or black cake?

Yuh mus be maaad!

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 23/12/2024 12:55

Rum cake in the building!

Would you rather?
LessonsinChemistryandLove · 24/12/2024 19:13

Great question, I’m stealing too! I think I would give up the food and keep the vibes. Chinese, Italian, Thai etc will have to do lol

LessonsinChemistryandLove · 26/12/2024 12:25

Just to update, my dad said save the food as you wouldn’t have the energy or the happiness to make or enjoy the music. Good points I think!

Judgejudysno1fan · 26/12/2024 12:59

A world with no Nigerian food sounds like a rubbish world to me.
My husband would not be happy.

Can give up afrobeats.

However I love chocolate more than both. Ha!

ImperialLeather00 · 26/12/2024 14:29

Hi all. Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas yesterday. Thanks for all your input.

@LessonsinChemistryandLove thanks for the update! I get your dads point, I truly do but still sticking to giving up food- I could survive on other cuisine!

My feelings exactly 😅.

The person who came up with this question must go down ⬇️

But if they insist, I'll give up the food, but will have some of your sorrel on the way out 🍷

GreyBeeplus3 · 20/01/2026 16:11

I'd give up the food;
My waistline gave up on me ages ago and needs no encouragement otherwise
But my ears still thankfully work fine and appreciate a brilliant tune or two!
