Black Mumsnetters

This board exists primarily for the use of Black Mumsnetters. Others are welcome to post but please be respectful.

Is it my imagination or are there more people pretending to be Black and making bizarre or race baiting comments on MN at the moment?

There have been some decidedly odd posts and comments recently. Black women are a not a monolith but there are often some common points of reference.

Indeed@Socrateswasrightaboutvoting . I don't know why, it is odd that people will pretend to be something, which soon becomes apparent, that they are not.🤔 I will of course keep my counsel about which thread I have in mind, right now!

IthinkIamAnAlien · 14/12/2024 13:44

I'm sorry but I haven't seen the comments you mention but my first thought was Kemi Badenoch, I don't think she's doing any black person any favours, the most appalling Conservative leader the party could have elected.

My hairdresser yesterday launched into some racist comments about black people, not what she usually does and I wondered if the tabloids had been feeding the racists? You might well be right about trolls, I grew up in Brixton and saw racism at first hand, it's horrible and 50 years on, it's still happening. 😥

I thought about Kemi Badenoch too. It’s like she has legitimised the “I’m a black woman and, contrary to 99.9999% of black people in Britain, I think [insert racist view here]” statements in the way that Priti Patel and Suella Braveman did with the more general “BAME” (hate that term) perspective. Now people (or AI bots?) can get away with it more from behind their screens.

It's all a bit odd.

I suppose it could people posting in the style of Kemi. Although Some of the comments I have seen would be odd even by her standards. I have the White Yardie whistling round my head whilst I am reading them but instead of hearing ' a different type of white' as he is fond of saying I hear 'a different type of Black'.

Its a different type of Black
-To not know how Black people got to the Caribbean
-To ask a predominantly white audience whether something is racist against Black people.

-Refer to Black people as Blacks
-To think Kemi is good for Black people/women.
-Several times recently I have read the Black Mumsnetters is not kind to Mixed heritage people. I must have missed those threads.

I have yet to meet any Black woman who would refer to an African woman, wearing traditional attire, in a photo, as "primitive". I did not see those comments last night, but it has appeared again. I am just thinkingHmm. If I have broken talk guidelines, by mentioning that, then please report my post@Socrateswasrightaboutvoting . This is an interesting, thought provoking thread.

Socrateswasrightaboutvoting · 14/12/2024 20:06

I haven't met one either@LadyKenya. i don't believe we have broken any talk guidelines. This is not a TAAT but more generally about patterns of behavior. As for primitive🙄not odd at all. Perhaps one no longer needs to have one drop, perhaps all one has to do is identify as Black...

OP posts:
FuckILookLike · 14/12/2024 20:08

How would you know though? Seeing as it’s an anonymous forum and all? Or do you mean posters are speaking in certain ways to come across as Black?

Socrateswasrightaboutvoting · 14/12/2024 20:17

Posters stating they are Black and saying things which suggest they are lying. Eg a poster stating they are Black and then referring to Black people as 'Blacks'. Or seeking the counsel of White people over Black people when it comes to racism against Black people and other suspect behavior.

OP posts:
LadyKenya · 14/12/2024 20:26

Exactly that. There are ways of detecting those who profess to be whatever, because of the language that they use. Certain words, and the use of them, would raise an eyebrow, or outright suspicion. Also not knowing obvious things, it all paints a picture. I don't know why people would try to be deceitful, but I guess that they can get a few sly digs in, whilst they are doing so.

b0zza1 · 14/12/2024 20:49

I agree there have been some odd posts. There was a thread that got picked up on by the Daily Mail, not to do with race but an affair and I wonder whether this has attracted extra trolls to the site in general? But why they do it God only knows.

Begsthequestion · 14/12/2024 20:57

There's a whole subreddit dedicated to this phenomenon, and I doubt Mumsnet is immune unfortunately.

https://www.reddit.com/r/AsABlackMan/

It could be racist trolls, or paid bad actors perhaps, trying to sow division.

Interesting!

I’m Black and I refer to Black people as ‘Blacks’ sometimes, especially if I’m talking about a group of us. My friends do it too. Not sure if it’s just something we’ve said as a joke when we were in school and have just carried on with it

Socrateswasrightaboutvoting · 14/12/2024 21:14

@Bozza The fame at any price brigade will make stuff up in the hope of getting picked up but the tabloid, reddit or other forums. Pretending to be Black seems to be a particular kind of nastiness.

@Begsthequestion Small d*ck energy everywhere it seems. But why the sudden up tick?

@FuckILookLike Other things that didn't happen... The door is that way.

You can literally search up my normal name which is MinnieTruck. I’ve posted on this board many times. I’m not sure why it’s so hard to believe that there are Black people who refer to other Black people as ‘Blacks.’ Maybe it’s a SW London thing but I doubt it.

No point of me going back and forth with you anyway, cya!

we don’t say this about white party leaders though do we? We don’t say they’re not doing white people any favours, because we’re not judging their race as being the most important thing about them?

Socrateswasrightaboutvoting · 14/12/2024 21:42

look at at that! A couple of posts which demonstrate my point.

OP posts:

@Socrateswasrightaboutvoting I'm not sure but I will say I've noticed the UK news subreddits lately are flooded with stories that paint anyone non-white, especially immigrants and refugees, negatively - honestly it's like something you'd expect to find on an EDL or NF forum, and it wasn't like this until recently.

The comment sections on these posts are often bereft of actual comments, as so many of them are removed for breaking reddit's posting rules (which are pretty lax imo, so you can imagine the content).

It seems in step with the latest findings about GB News' "obsession" with muslims: https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/gb-news-islam-report-uk-b2663469.html

It's common knowledge that Reddit has recently been flooded with bots, so it might not even be real people behind the posts or comments.

I do strongly suspect this is part of a paid-for propaganda campaign, funded by someone who stands to gain from spreading racism in Britain.

GB News broadcasts half of all UK stories about Muslims, in ‘obsession’ says report

GB News has called the findings ‘highly defamatory’

Hmm, yes, well white people have the luxury of not being judged as a whole group, but as an individual when they do something wrong. Who would have thought it!

Socrateswasrightaboutvoting · 14/12/2024 21:51

@Begsthequestion There has been a definite up tick in racism since covid and 'free speech'. People seem emboldened and any attempt to push back is dismissed as 'woke'. White people seem to be proud to show me their anti Muslim and anti Jewish credentials. But they are not racist...

and, this was in trending, I didn’t realize the section it was in or I wouldn’t have barged in, even with good intentions. Sorry again.
